Hello, I have setup at a couple hackintosh setups over the last couple years. My first was on my primary machine with an install of leopard, while it worked fairly well there were some MAJOR issues. Here's a few of them:

  • The system would freeze and require a hard reboot if I clicked a certain button in the System Preferences window, sorry cannot remember which one.
  • The system clock was really buggy, it would often cause my clock to display incorrectly. Seemed to happen most in Windows after booting into Mac OSX. Not sure why one boot would effect another like that, never had that issue with Ubuntu or other dual booting OS's.
  • Stability was not perfect, would freeze at times.
  • Could not update easily, I believe I used the kalaway method to install originally
  • I could not get my soundblaster sound card to work which meant no sound unless I swapped cables behind my rig (dont bother commenting, I hate it too, probably will not use it with a new hackintosh setup)
  • Would not wake from sleep at times.

Then a few months ago I noticed a lot of threads popping up about netbooks like the Dell Mini and MSI Wind being able to run Mac OSX Leopard very well. I eventually bought a MSI Wind and initially set it up as a hackbook setup. It was a vast improvement over my desktop attempt from earlier. It was what I would call stable and usable for daily operations and had little to no issues with stability or speed. It was nearly perfect! I did however have a few issues:

  • The audio would not work with a headset plugged in, it would still play sound via speakers
  • Would not wake from sleep at times similar to desktop.
  • I had some other issues but they are not important to this post (touchpad, webcam, etc.)

Now the point of all this thread, I am curious how many of these issues are still there especially upgradability and things of that nature. I am hoping to setup a dual boot on my current system which I will post specs for below. What issues should I expect if I go ahead with this, will most of my issues be resolved? (If it is as nice as the Wind or better ill be happy!) or should I expect many of the same headaches. Are there work-arounds and fixes? I dont mind putting in the work unless its mind bendingly difficult!

Also do you recommend a kalaway type install with kexts and such already added or going from retail? I dont mind either way I just want the best results. I plan to use this as a method for using a few Mac only apps like Coda and some other web development apps (im a web designer!) so I need this as stable as possible to possibly do real work on. Overall I just want to know what I should expect and what progress has been made in the last few months while I have not been keeping up, hence this post instead of backtracking months of mixed posts!

Thank you for your help! :) If this does not pan out I may just look into buying a second hand mac mini or something along those lines.

My System:

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz 3MB L2 Cache

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L

EVGA 8800GT Superclocked

G.SKILL 2x 1GB DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Ram

1x Seagate 300gb Sata Drive

Win7 the only OS currently, will keep current install and add OSX if possible (that ok?)

err...did I forget anything? its late and ive not posted my specs in a while lol..

Note: I will most likely use a 4gb usb flash drive to install, worked GREAT with Win7 and Mac OSX on the Wind :P

ok, been researching a bit on my own all day, looks like I do want to go ahead and give boot-132 and a vanilla retail dvd a try because I seem to have a decent hardware setup to do so and using official system updates would rock.

I am planning to use this guide unless anyone has one that is newer/clearer:

the only thing I am unsure about is what kexts I will need, I would assume one of you more talented folks that really know their stuff could look at my specs in the above post and point me in the right direction for finding the proper kexts and so on.

I just want to ensure I have everything I need before I go and purchase a retail disc. All help is appreciated!

*edit* doh realized this I posted this thread in post-installation...guess I will move my topic over to installation. Mods feel free to delete this thread.

your system has perfect specs for a smooth vanilla install. you should definately give it a try!

try out this kext package to get everything working:

thanks for your reply, it took some time and work but I am here :( ive got most working out of the box but having a couple issues. first the same keyboard issue I had a couple years ago, I use a ps2 keyboard and it will only start working after I boot up and unplug/replug my keyboard, then it works beautifully. what fix would I need for this? I need this fixed asap to avoid pulling out my hair lol!

I dont really care to install a pack of kexts if possible, just install each kext and fix as issues pop up. I want this as minimalistic as possible. is there a fix specifically for the keyboard issue?

also the first thing I tried was to change my display resolution, when I set it up to 1280x1024 my screen went blue and required a hard reset, then restarted with the proper resolution set correctly. a video card issue perhaps?

I will post back as I find other issues (hopefully wont be any!), the internet is working great at least, im posting from my system now -_-

*edit/update*

Ok I have everything working just about! Keyboards working perfectly, sounds working, internet, I have my bootloader working properly so switching back and forth between win7 and mac osx is a breeze. ive got my ubuntu file share connecting so I can access all my work files and have been using the OS as much as possible. It is lightning fast!

So far the only couple "issues" i have are mainly cosmetic, if you guys know any solutions please let me know:

1. Every time I change resolutions the screen goes to a blue screen and will not come back, I have to hard reset but it does keep the setting after that. Any ideas about this? Its not something I edit all the time so I can probably ignore it.

2. When the machine goes to sleep my internet connection quits working, requires me to restart my machine to get it back. I have disabled sleep for the time being.

3. I did not setup the ubuntu file share correctly I do not think. Here's a screenshot:

You can see I have my "grimdeath-server" that showed up in Mac OSX on its own automatically. But when I click it I get the screen you see and the connect as button does nothing.

I was able to get it working in a similar way to how I set it up in windows, use "connect to server" and enter in the smb info. It works great and I even have it autostarting at startup. I am just curious what I would need to do to get the default share working, the one labeled "grimdeath-server". I cannot rename the IP address named share right now and it seems a bit slow....its simply a cosmetic issue though, just thought I would ask!

4. Time machine....any chance of getting this to work with my Ubuntu share?

5. How can I hide the win7 drive and its system resources partition from my desktop or keep them from mounting. They are NTFS. I have been manually ejecting them each boot.

If I can get these last few things setup I think im done and ready for primetime!
