Trying to fix my audio without messing up /System/Library/Extensions

For the past week or so I've been trying to get my onboard audio going, in a hackintosh set up with Chameleon 2 RC1 installed on my GPT disk's EFI partition.  I've actually installed OS X on this machine twice before, through different methods, each of which I've been able to get working audio in (including the installation I'm using right now, which is at 10.5.7, just like the new one I'm trying).  But this time - at least so far - I haven't added, removed or modified anything in my system volume's /System/Library/Extensions, which is preferably how I'd like to keep it.

Incidentally my audio hardware is a Realtek ALC662 (here's my mobo on NewEgg).

I've tried a ton of different combinations of audio-related kexts from this forum and elsewhere, both targeted to the ALC662 and otherwise.  I've tried full-on replacement kexts for my audio system, including VoodooHDA - and the best I've been able to get is System Profiler recognizing the hardware, but with no sound devices on it. Typically I just get a big fat "No built-in audio" and my Sound prefpane is all grayed out.

I read someone saying that inserting replacement kexts in the Chameleon EFI partition isn't necessarily foolproof - whether they're discarded for lacking dependencies, or being overridden by /S/L/E extensions, or whatever - so I tried an EFI string method as documented here.  This didn't help either.

It's looking more and more like I'll have to spoil my pristine Extensions folder in order to get sound on my system, but I'm still holding out hope that I'll be able to find a way around this.  All I want is stereo output - I don't care about mic input, and I don't even have any additional audio ports on my machine.  I just can't figure out how to replicate my previous successes without modifying my Apple kexts.

So my request to you, dear, wonderful, helpful forum reader, is to suggest whatever solution you can think of to fix hackintosh audio without diving into /System/Library/Extensions.  What patched kexts should I try?  Which ones should I avoid/remove?  Any more tips on getting my sound hardware loaded through boot.plist? Any help is appreciated.
