"/ What if I get the GTX 285 for Mac version? I don't see it on NewEgg since Apple started offering it, but I'd assume I could find it somewhere for cheaper. uRabbit Posted October 2, 2009 Author Share Posted October 2, 2009 So I have all but placed my order on these items. I want to make sure I get everything I need. I am going with the 4890 by MSI. It's got a cooling fan. I doubt I'll put much strain on the card (hardest exercise probably being The Sims 3) but why not, right? Sticking with the power unit that's on that list, cause frankly I don't know what you mean by 80+ haha! Am I forgetting anything? Could someone list small things like cables or something that I might be forgetting? Also any program I may forget? Thanks! Edit: will be running 10.5.7 until I feel adventurous. Also I'm having trouble viewing weaksauce's UD3P guide. I registers and tries joining. Before using weaksauce12/Kaido's guides I set up several UD3P based systems using the Auzigog guide. To my knowledge, you don't nee the USB drive to install Leopard. (Though it's good to have for Snow Leopard. I was surprised when I did my first SL install on a UD3P not long ago. Using the LifeHacker guide -and since there's an even easier method than the first- it's actually a bit less of an adventure than the older Leopard methods. Once done, everything worked without any dicking around what-so-ever.) I'm not that familiar with ATI graphic cards, but I'm guessing you may need to scour netkas.org for info on setting up your 4890 for proper hardware acceleration. Netkas seems to be the master of all things ATI/OSx86. By the way, 80+ just refers to the energy efficiency of a PSU being > 80%. That's basically the percentage of energy that's actually converted to power (at peak use), rather than being wasted as heat. The PSU you picked out lists > 72%. Personally I've been accused of not saving the planet because I don't live an die by these numbers, but in my own real-world use of scads of PSUs for various system builds, I find that in average usage it often doesn't make that much difference to really yank your hair out over. It's one of those things that can't hurt to be conscious of though. Also, AMD seems to be progressing very nicely with their 5000 series. Best cards you can get now. And the 4890 is still a beast and at a great price. However, I regret to inform everyone here that I have gone the PC route. I don't have to deal with compatibility issues (until I get Windows 7), there's more support for BYO PC's, Windows is better for gaming, and it's not illegal to install Windows on any hardware.
