Gelakinetic
I've got a fresh install of iAtkos, 10.5.7, and I need a NIC. I've got a 680i LT SLI board, but the onboard LAN is dead, confirmed by Vista and Ubuntu. I've checked the compatability wiki, and the only card I can find for sale is this one: http://www.computergate.com/products/item.cfm?prodcd=NECE1GB. I'd rather get one from newegg, but they don't seem to mention the chipsets of their NICs, so does anyone know if they have any NICs with these realtek chipsets? RTL8111C RTL8169SC RTL8139 Alternatively, could anyone point me to any known working PCI or PCIe NIC on newegg? Are Intel NICs well supported? thanks all! -KPN Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/174716-best-pci-or-pcie-nic/ Share on other sites
vladthebad
Realtek 8169 is worth using as far as a cheap nic.... Rosewood has one for like $12 last I looked. As far as "BEST".... I'm not a fan of the realteks except where "cheap" is important. Now, getting a GREAT nic in a PCI or PCIe card seems to be a bit of a project. I've got one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16833106014 And it works great.... I picked mine up off of ebay for like $20 Is it an awesome NIC? yes. Is it worth the money? Not unless you NEED PCIe, and can't find anything else that works.... Good likelyhood an 82574L would work now as well, since thats what the mac pro uses now, but I haven't tested my 82574L PCIe nic yet, possibly tonight/tomorrow/next time I tear into the machine. Gelakinetic
Hehe, $160 is a bit steep for a NIC for me. In fact, that would completely deplete my BSG complete series DVD fund... Good call on the (I think you meant) Rosewill NICs. I poked around newegg again and found this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16833166002 The pictures show the RTL8169 chipset, which got thumbs up for compatibility. Why they couldn't mention the chipset in a searchable field, I don't know. PCIe isn't necessary for me, but I have a spare PCIe connector, so I threw it in the title. I'm interested in how the 82574L works out for you. When you do tear into your machine, could you post some results?
