My vanilla OS X installation booting using Chameleon 2 RC 1 recently started generating EBIOS errors. I did not have the patience to wait for the errors to end, so I booted up using the Boot132 CD and reinstalled Chameleon hoping to fix the problem but it didn't. I finally got the system to boot using Chameleon 1.0.11.

Anyway if I boot the system using gparted CD, my 320 GB HDD appears as if it has not partition table! fdisk shows the partition table just fine. By the way the disk uses GPT and has 3 partitions of approx 100GB for Vista, OS X and time machine, apart from the 200 MB efi partition. I used partition inspector to take a look at the disk under OS X, and I really dont understand what's going on! Here's the output that partition inspector generated:

*** Report for internal hard disk ***

Could somebody help me understand why I have a bunch of unknown partitions and how do I fix the partition table if the partitions appearing after the 4th partition are {censored}.

Thanks, and happy 4th!

I'm surprised no one answered this yet.... There is nothing wrong with your partitions, or that output. GPT partitioning specifies 128 "blocks" for partitions to be defined. On a typical mac you only use 3 or 4 of them. So many programs (stupidly) print out the others as 'unknown'. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table

Actually, there probably is something wrong with the GPT partitions. The start and end values of unused entries are normally 0, and the fact that the partition inspector tool (I'm not familiar with it, though) printed out bogus data for entries 29-128 but not for the unused 5-28 suggests that something clobbered the final 100 GPT entries. This would in turn corrupt the CRC checks on the main GPT table. I don't recall precisely what different OSes do when they see this sort of damage, but indianajones's observation that the "320 GB HDD appears as if it has not partition table" is one possible result.

Given the date of the original post (over a month ago), this advice may be too late, but: You could try my GPT fdisk program. If I'm right, you should be able to use its option to load the backup partition table in place of the corrupt main partition table. (This is the 'c' option on the experts' menu.) If this seems to work, then saving the partition table (via 'w') should correct the problem. If you're still suffering from this problem, then I'd be very interested to hear if this works -- I designed GPT fdisk's recovery features to help in precisely this sort of situation, but it's relatively untested in the real world. I realize you may well have found another solution by now, though.

As a broader matter, there's the question of how your GPT table got damaged. It could be a virus or a GPT-unaware boot loader or disk utility tried to write data into an area of the disk that's normally unused on MBR disks. Because of the virus possibility, I recommend you run a virus check on your system. (OTOH, if it is a virus, it's probably a fairly old DOS or Windows one, which seems improbable on a Mac-only computer.)

Edit: After posting I noticed the Vista partition; I must have overlooked that initially. This increases the possibility of a virus causing the problem.
