keef
hey everybody... i've finally gotten 10.4.6 installed and i'm booting into osx no problem. but when i try to launch *most* applications, nothing happens for a minute then i get that spinning color wheel thing and the only way to get rid of it is to relaunch the finder. it seems like the finder is crashing (not responding) every time i have this problem. relaunching finder seems to kill whatever process i was attempting to run. i guess it's the same as restarting explorer.exe in windows. anyway, here's a list of apps and functions that do not work or cause a crash: -TextEdit (also, attempting to open files with TextEdit) -Apple > About this Mac (that causes a complete crash, weird blue screen) -Chess (yea i said it) -Any PowerPC app even with Rosetta checked -there's more but i cant think of any to my surprise, itunes and safari work fine. i haven't been able to get my network adapter to work yet. not being able to edit any files in textedit is really killing me. any ideas? edav
Hi keef, Maybe you should start by telling us a (little) more about your config... Did you check that every devices it includes is in the HCL of the OSX version you installed? Did you clean ownership? I recommend you to do it from the install DVD. edav. keef
oops, sorry... it's a Dell Precision M60 laptop, and i think most of the hardware is in the HCL. the audio and video work fine, and the network adapters are defintiely listed. It's an Intel Pentium M, 1.7Ghz, SSE2 i did not clean ownership... doing so now. thanks for the responses! *EDIT* is cleaning ownership the same as "repairing disk permissions?" *** thanks again Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/17295-1046-applications-wont-launch/#findComment-111662 Share on other sites

Is it a Broadcom 570x Gigabit Ethernet? If yes, find the vendor ID and the device ID and search this forum accordingly. edav
thanks edav i cleaned ownership but same issues are occuring. continuing to work on speed boost stuff now. any other ideas? Did you try to install 10.4.5 first? I ask this because it works like a charm on my laptop and I find that a lot of users have problems with 10.4.6, IMHO. So if you don't really need this version, you should give the other a try. HTH, edav.
