My machine is an Intel Mac. I have (had) 10.5.5 from iDeneb 1.3. I downloaded and ran the iDeneb combo update kit to update it to 10.5.7. Install seemed to progress well, but will not reboot completely. It simply hangs on the white Apple screen and the progress indicator spins and spins. I rebooted with the -v flag, and it gets all the way to this

Got boot device: IOService: blah blah

BSD root: disk0s1 major 14 minor 1

But it just sits there. I have let it sit for about 20 minutes but with no additional output or progress. I tried to reboot using -x -v, but same result. I then rebooted using -s and ran an fsck on the disk, but it came back normal.

I'm very familiar with computers (Linux, Windows, etc), but not so much on a Mac.

Am I missing a step? What else can i look at to troubleshoot the problem? Somebody please help, its critical that I get this machine back today.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what causes this either... I had the same exact issue! I too am using the iDeneb release. I am currently posting this from 10.5.5! I tried upgrading to 10.5.7 using the combo update, and my system did the same exact thing your talking about, on boot it hangs at the apple logo and the thing spins forever. No error or anything, when booting with -v as you said I get stuck at those same lines too. Nothing seems to happen after that.

I even used the DSDT patcher (gui version) because I read somewhere that it was necessary. However strangely the DSDT patcher screwed up my windows partition, I could no longer boot windows, or a windows install disc for that matter. For some reason it would blue screen!! That freaked me out for a short while, since I could no longer boot to windows or mac os... Luckily the 10.5.5 iDeneb install disc booted up like before, and I was able delete the dsdt.aml file someone instructed me to delete, and windows once again booted. I'm not sure how that file would effect the windows side of things at all, but thats just what I've experienced.

So after that I just said screw it and erased the partition and went back to a fresh iDeneb 10.5.5...

If anyone has a solution that would be great to upgrade! What are the benefits of upgrading anyway?

What does 10.5.7 have that 10.5.5 doesn't?

  • 1 month later...

I wish I could offer something to help, but I'm having the exact same problem. Hangs on the gray Apple forever and ever and ever. (Tried all three boot flavors; no luck).

I'm using an Asus eee 1000H, 2Gb Ram, I was able to get the ideneb OSX 10.5.5 working. (Though it took a dozen little twists and turns and lots of cruising through "How To" guides.)

I've tried now twice to upgrade to 10.5.7, but no dice. Frankly, being new to the Mac OS, I've been going on a lot of faith that these updates truly are vital and important. But honestly, the system was working just fine on 10.5.5, so until those more capable than me get this problem worked out, I'm not going to bother trying again. I've got work to do and I need a Mac to do it. (Which, actually is turning out to be rather fun once you get used to the new environment.)

So cheers, and thanks to everybody for sharing their experiences and offering their advice! I'll look around in a couple of months to see if things have gotten any smoother before trying again.
