Hi Everyone,

I'm a long-time Mac user, mainly running Logic Studio (Legal) and other music creation apps. The problem is that the trusty old PPC (single core) is running pretty slow nowadays and the new Pros are just out of my price range. So I decided to build a Hackintosh (or is it Hackint0sh?). I've just completed the build but I'm having trouble getting an OS to install. Here's the spec:

Intel Q6600 Core2 Quad 2.4GHz 1066MHz FSB

ASUS P5Q Deluxe

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 GPU

Corsair Dominator (2x2048MB) DDR2 PC2-8500 1066MHz 2x240pin DIMMs

OCZ StealthXStream 600 Watt PSU

Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB SATAII 32MB Cache Dual Processor Hard Drive

Pioneer DVR-216 20x Int. DVDRW SATA

Thermaltake Big Typhoon 120 VX (CPU Cooler)

Lian Li PC-8B Case

I followed the OSX Leopard 10.5.5 Installation Guide For Complete Beginner link from the OSx86 Wiki and hoped I would just need to install iDeneb and be up and running. As far as installing, I've managed to get to the screen showing the Apple (Was feeling pretty pleased at this point) but after a while the "NO ENTRY" symbol appears over the top of the logo. As instructed in the article I pressed F8 and then entered -v and the screen displayed a whole heap of code (please see attached pics) ending with:

ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; default to full-secure.

Still waiting for root device

I don't have any knowledge of Windows command line or Linux Terminal. Infact I hadn't even heard the word BIOS untiill a few days ago. I have followed the insanelymac.net link suggested in the article (for those having problems) but this site no longer seems to be up.

1. Should I persevere with iDeneb, is it the best option for what I want? If so, what should I do next?

2. I do have the genuine Apple Leopard Disks and have also looked at the EFi-X device, but at the moment it only supports Gigabyte Motherboards. Although, I have heard that by making a small modification to the BIOS I can make this work on my machine. Is this true? Is it hard? How do I do it?

3. Lastly, I've looked at Chameleon. As far as I can understand this does a similar job to EFi-X, allowing the installation of a retail OS but the site is full of strange words like "Kext" that leave me pretty clueless.

Any help would really be appreciated, I knew this wouldn't be a walk in the park, but I'm beginning to wonder if I've make a big mistake here.

Cheers,

simon

Wierd, the root device error is coming from the lack of the chipset driver. Try booting with -f -v and see what happens...

Also you might need to modify your bios....check here: clicky

Also look here for installation instructions: clicky

Thanks MGJulius,

1. I tried booting with -v -f and and also -v and even ? but after I press enter it just returns to the prompt (_)

2. One of the links that you posted enabled me to download a pre-modified BIOS for the P5Q but I was nort able to install as it said the ROM file was older than the existing board.

3. Also one of the links mentioned that he had successfully installed Kalyway_10.5.1 on the same board. I couldn't find 10.5.1 (only 10.5.2) I'm downloading it (demonoid) at the moment - do you think this is the way to go?

4. Lastly both links mention altering the BIOS and Coding - this is not something I've done before (not even sure which app to use, textedit? terminal?) Is there somewhere I could find out more about this?

Cheers again, and if anyone can offer any help.......
