pwnage101
i've seen tutorials that say "choose this kernel" and "choose that kernel" but i'd like to know the reasons. there are multiple kernel options (including the default vanilla) but it just can't seem to find an explanation for the reasons of their existence. Sleep? does it help your computer sleep? Speedstep? does it make your computer faster? Vanilla? is it flavored sorry if there are answers everywhere and i'm too blind to find them. please post them if there are... thanks. MGJulius
Yay the choices of kernels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here's some help on choosing: Vanilla: The unmodified retail apple kernel that real macs use, its more authentic. Cons: can only work on the Intel Core series or higher and on intel chipsets (excluding the new nvidia ones). Sleep: Sleep support for a wider range of processors, and works on almost all processers Speedstep: Provides speedstep (reducing cpu multiplier) for lots of intel processors. Most kernel's (excluding vanilla) are SSE2/SSE3. SSE is a instruction set for processors, if you computer only has SSE2 do not use any SSE3 only kerenl's. If it's SSE3 use whatever you want (besides vanilla if you cant) Hope this info helps, MGJulius Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/171114-sse2sse3-kernel/#findComment-1179702 Share on other sites
pwnage101
thanks for the reply! but i'm still confused about speedstep. i thought reduction of the CPU multiplier is done in the BIOS and is independent of the operating system. before i replaced my cooling system, i undervolted and underclocked my quad core during the summer. i wasn't even touching the windows operating system. is OS X different or something? Cruxado
pwnage101, SleepStep basically enables Intel processors to throttle down (or rather slow down) when its full processing power (potential) is not necessary. This is crucial for Laptops so they don't waste their batteries. Lets say you're on a PC or Mac laptop... you are using the internet to view Insanelymac's forums... you don't Need to use 100% of your processor... just maybe 20%, so your Speedstep will lower the clock speeds to conserve battery but providing the optimal performance for your current task. On the other hand, if you decide to play Quake 4, your computer will boost its speed and performance to the Processors Maximum capacity! PS. Speedstep isn't really necessary for Desktops... IMO Hope this helps, good luck! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/171114-sse2sse3-kernel/#findComment-1180325 Share on other sites
