I've been stuck with this for quite a few days now, I have searched everywhere for answers and haven't really gotten anywhere as of yet – it doesn't help that my understanding of this is quite poor. Before I start explaining the problem, here is my hardware:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 (Overclocked to 4.0ghz)

Memory: Corsair 6gb DDR3

HDD: An old 40gb 2.5 HDD from a PS3 (test drive)

My problem: I can't seem to boot into the OS X installation, it starts loading files once I have inserted my retail Leopard DVD, and then my computer just shuts off for no apparent reason. I am quite sure my OS X disc is 100% working. I'm using Boot-132 that I have modified with some kexts that someone had provided for my motherboard, and that all boots fine. I have tried a range of boot options such as -x, -f, -v, -legacy, -maxcpus=1, -platform=OSX86 to try and diagnose the problem but I have got the same result every time. I really can't figure what is causing my PC to just shut off like it is.

I really need any kind of guidance on things I can try to get this working. Any useful resources, guides - anything! I am so desperate to get this working now. If Boot-132's not the way to go, what are the alternatives?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm. Sounds like it could be hardware related. Have you by any chance installed a different operating system on this hardware without issues? Maybe try installing with just 4GB of ram to see if that works. You can also try installing using a pre-made distro of OS X (i.e. iPC OSx86, JaS, iDeneb, etc.) to see if that gets you further. Sorry I can't be more of help. Good luck.

I have installed Vista x64 and that works absolutely fine. I could try it with 4gb RAM, but it's tri channel so I'm not sure you can set it up with 2 modules – I'll have to look it up. I think if I don't get anywhere with this I will give iPC a try, but I've heard there's quite a lot of unnecessary stuff in with it.

Take a look at Digital Dreamers thread in Tutorials Forum. Read page 1 which contains his method of install of the X58-UD5 board (it works on your board also). He has a script and the necessary kexts for a very easy retail install. You need two HDs and one of the OSX distros to start. To make your life easy use all SATA drives (HD and DVD). The second post in that thread provides an EFI partition boot done by Wolfienuke. He has a script that automates setting up the EFI partition for boot (it's based on Munkey's work). That script makes it very easy to make modifications and try different configurations in EFI.

If you insist on using a Boot132 method take a look at some of the threads with the ASUS i7 boards. I made a number of tries with Boot132 on my X58 board, but could get nothing to work.
