Well finished up an install of iPC 10.5.6 on a Gigabyte G31M-ES2L, with a 8800gt. All looks fine and I went to backup. Decided to backup on a 16 gig USB flash drive. It was late and about half way thru it was going to take another 15-20 minutes so I canceled it and figured I would back it up the next day earlier. But now when I go into Disk Utility it tells me the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "Failing" and I can't backup. Oddly in the BIOS SMART is disabled. If I boot from the install DVD it sais all is ok, but when I backup it appears to make an image but it doesn't show up when I go to a normal desktop.

Not sure what to do next. Is there some kinda fix for the SMART thing reporting failure? Some other way to backup? Anyone else have similar problems?

SMART status is not for USB disks or SSD. If its failing on a mechanical disk, then you'd better backup quickly. The last time I had this error, my drive failed after 3 weeks, and I had to take it to a data recovery center.

It is happening on a IDE drive, but the issue is it doesn't let me back up. States that the drive is busy, but everything else works fine and if booting from the DVD it then says all is fine.

Does S.M.A.R.T. work even if its disabled in BIOS? I'm skeptical there is anything wrong with the drive. I guess if there is I'll find out shortly!!!
