Hi,

I am trying to install KalyWay 10.5.2 onto a homemade computer. (This is probably my first mistake.) I burned the image to a disc and tried to install. I have tried to install it in three different modes, -v, -s, and -x. Each time a little after Darwin starts, it gives me a line that says

AppleVIAATADriver: VIA UNKNOWN (CMD 0x2018, CTR 0x2024, IRQ 17, BM 0x2000)

Every minute or so after that it gives me the deadly, yet too common, Still Waiting for Root Device error message. I am not really techy so I am not totally sure what is my problem is. I was following this guide up to installer.

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...DualBoot_10.5.2

Here are some of my specs. If you need more just ask.

Motherboard: Intel Guardfish DQ965GF

Chipset: Q965

Processor: DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E6420, 2.13 GHz

RAM: Kingston 9905316-005.A04LF (2GB)

Hard Drive: SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB (I have 2)

Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS

If you have any questions please ask.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Is your DVD drive PATA and what is the make and model of your PATA controller?

I'm guessing it's a Marvell controller. Those work with AppleVIAATA.kext, but it doesn't like yours for some reason.

If it's a 6121 like mine the only OSX86 DVD you can use presently is iPC 10.5.6 final, or maybe (haven't tested it) XxX 10.5.6 final V2 (V1 doesn't have support for the 6121).

Another solution is to buy a SATA to PATA adapter so you can plug your DVD drive into a SATA port.

Here is another thing I found. It says Serial ATA, but it is made by Marvell (instead of Intel like my other two SATA controllers). Marvell 88SE6101 Serial ATA II Host Controller I also think this may be it because the other two SATA controllers are very similar, and I only have three drives in the machine (two hard drives and one DVD drive)

Is that it?

If not, where do you think you could find it? Right now I am using the trial version of Everest.

I'm not sure if this means anything, but in line before the AppleVIAATADrive: VIA UNKNOWN error, it says IOATAController Device Blocking Bus.

Thanks for the patience.

Yes, Marvell 88SE6101, that's it.

You should be able to boot and install using an iPC 10.5.6 final DVD (Or you can just quickly skip out and buy a SATA DVD drive or a PATA to SATA adapter so you can plug your DVD drive into a SATA port).

The drivers on the install DVD you're using now does not have support for the Marvell 6101, hence the "VIA UNKNOWN" message followed by "Waiting For Root Device".

Thank you very much. I am downloading the the iPC 10.5.6 Final image as I type. It may take a little while (I have slow internet) but I will keep this updated as I go. I'm not sure if this means anything, but I was looking at my device manager last night, and saw that under other devices there was a PCI Communications device with a yellow question mark by it. I am not totally sure what it said exactly because I am not currently at the computer (I will post that as soon as I can). Thanks again. I sure hope it works.

Hmm... the Torrent I tried to download or the Torrent program isn't downloading it very fast (between 1 and 20 kb/s). What would you recommend for a torrent program and do you know of any fast torrents. And I have to get the 10.5.6 Final version right? Not just the 10.5.6.

Thanks again.

I use Transmission on OS X and uTorrent on Vista. uTorrent doesn't work for me on OS X.

Yes, you need "iPC_OSx86_10_5_6_Universal_PPF5_Final" - speed should be fine, it's got 80+ seeders at the moment....let me see..yep, downloading at full speed here.

Torrents can only be fast if they are being actively seeded by many people with fast upload speeds.

I hope you are still reading this... I finished downloading the iPC 10.5.6 Final and I got a little farther, but am still stuck. I got past the Still waiting for root device message, but it has been stuck at the grey screen with the apple logo and a spinning circle below it for the past few hours. I am not totally sure what the problem is, but I have a few ideas. First off, I'm not sure if this will make a difference, but I downloaded the image on a mac and burnt it using the Disk Utilities app. While it was burning, it came out of the CD drive and said pretty much the DVD could not finish burning for some reason....

This is the Disk Utility Log:

Starting verification tool: 2009-05-04 18:21:00 -0800

2009-05-04 18:21:00 -0800: Verifying volume “iPC 10.5.6 Mac OS X Install DVD”

2009-05-04 18:17:04 -0800: Burn failed

2009-05-04 18:16:57 -0800: Finishing burn

The torrent file I used was Demonoid.com=_-iPC_OSx86_10_5_6_Universal_FINAL [mininova].torrent However the file I downloaded was iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF5 (Final).iso so it seems to be the right thing. Would it make a difference if I burnt it on a PC with Nero or something like that? One other thing. To get to where I got stuck in the install in OS X I had to switch the SATA config in the BIOS from IDE to AHCI. Is there anyway around this so when OS X is installed I don't have to change this setting every time I want to switch OS? Thanks

Hey, sorry for the delay I have been away from a computer for a month. I burnt the image and it looks like the same thing is happening as before... hopefully you can see these well enough to figure something out. I should be checking this pretty regularly so if you have any questions, just ask.
