IntelCHx SATA drivers if you have a SATA HDD....?

OK - I went ahead and tried "LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA" and it worked - I have a working install, though it's quite buggy. I can't help but wonder if another Chipset would perform better, which leads to this crucial question:

Can I change drivers/kexts post-install? I bet I can and I need someone to please point me to a post that will get me started down that path - I'm sure it's a very broad subject...

BTW - my storage controller is IDE, so that means my drive is not SATA, right?

Thanks
