I set my computer up first running Windows XP to make sure everything was working correctly, however you don't need to do this. In XP I checked CPU and GPU temperatures under load and idle using SpeedFan. I checked the CPU and GPU speeds using Cinebench as a baseline using the optimized BIOS settings provided by Gigabyte. Once I was satisfied that all my components were working properly I decided to attempt a Hackintosh install. The iPC OSx86 distro makes getting this Hackintosh up and running a breeze and I've thrown an incredible amount of old and new software at this box and it has handled almost everything without issue, from Final Cut Pro to high end 3D apps. I'm even running the iPhone SDK 2.2 and the iPhone simulator! These instructions should work fine with the Gigabyte UD3P board as well but I haven't tested it yet.

 

My exact motherboard:

Gigabyte EP45-UD3R v1.1 motherboard (2009 03 available)

Before you begin please read these notes... I'm sure some of it might be useful I promise.

I'm using a SATA drive but if you want to use IDE and have more than 3GB RAM you'll need a special JMicron Kext.

I'm using a USB keyboard and mouse so that's what I'd recommend you use

I burned my iPC disc at 2X and verified the disc using my burning app, Nero Express

Let the Apple OS X Installer check the DVD the first time during install

I used an external USB DVD-ROM but a SATA drive should work okay

Make sure you reformat your drive after each failed attempt, unless you get it on first attempt which hopefully you do, I didn't!

Dual booting with Windows is super easy with the UD3R, almost too easy. I've added a section at the bottom describing a triple boot setup.

Make sure anything you don't need is disconnected, such as IDE drives or external USB peripherals, even speakers, keep it simple!

Make sure your DVD and HD are plugged into Yellow SATA connectors on the UD3R, not the purple connectors, those are for RAID only and we're not using them

Know the darwin boot flags and what they do

-s Single User mode, won't load GUI or mount partitions, use for recovery or system maintenance

-v Verbose mode, displays boot log lines, useful for finding boot issues

-f Force reloads all kernel extensions (kexts/drivers) and dumps the kext cache

---- You can also manually delete the kext cache at /System/Library/Extensions.mkext and OS X will automatically recreate it

-x Safe mode, ignores the kext cache and only loads the minimum kexts

 

Let's get started already!

This guide may seem daunting but it's really not as bad as it looks. It's long because I cover every step in detail. This guide isn't and end all be all guide. I'm sure there is a lot of tweaking that can be done so experiment after you get a working system if you feel comfortable.

 

Step 1 - BIOS setup

Boot your computer and hit the DEL key at the Gigabyte Springboard to enter the BIOS setup screen

Once this screen has loaded move your cursor to the right and select 'Load Optimized Defaults'

This will give us a clean baseline of BIOS settings to work from

Below are some screen captures of my exact BIOS settings which are working great

You might want to print them out or have them available to you to peruse while you set your own BIOS up

Below are basically the only changes I had to make from the 'Optimized Defaults' that the UD3R ships with

I'm sure they can be tweaked but these are working for me so far

 

Standard CMOS Features

---- Change the Date and Time to the correct information first of all

---- Drive A - Disabled (We don't need the floppy drive port to be turned on, simple housecleaning here)

Advanced CMOS Features

---- First Boot Device - CDROM

---- Second Boot Device - Hard Disk

---- Init Display First - PEG (PCI Express Graphics, PCI should work too)

Integrated Peripherals

---- SATA RAID/AHCI Mode - AHCI

---- SATA Port0-3 Native Mode - Enabled

---- USB Mouse Support - Enabled

---- Onboard SATA/IDE Device - Disabled (This completely turns off the single green IDE connector on the motherboard)

---- Onboard Serial Port 1 - Disabled

---- Onboard Parallel Port - Disabled

Power Management Setup

---- PME Event Wake Up - Disabled (Wake by LAN port)

---- Power On by Ring - Disabled (For use with a modem, we're not using this)

---- HPET Mode - 64 bit (High Precision Event Timer, something to do with CPU power management I think)

 

Once you have made those changes hit F10, then Y to save the changes and reboot

 

NOTE: I usually set my system up to boot to the CD drive first, then the hard drive but this is less necessary because the UD3R has a built in boot select. Simply hit the F12 key at the Gigabyte Springboard to select whichever drive you'd like to boot from.

 

Step 2 - Install Leopard using the iPC disc

Put the iPC disc in your optical drive and boot your computer

Hit F12 at the Gigabyte Springboard to select your boot drive

I installed from an external USB DVD so that is what I selected

Boot from DVD, hit F8 at the Darwin prompt, type -x then hit enter to boot

After you hit enter it should be 7 minutes 3 seconds until the OS X installer asks you for input

The first screen asking you for input will be the language selection screen

'Use English for the main language' should be selected by default

Click the arrow to continue

Once the Welcome screen shows up click Utilities > Disk Utility in the menu bar

Disk Utility should launch in a few seconds

Select your hard drive in the left pain and click the 'Partition' tab on the right

Select how many partitions you want from the drop down and size them accordingly

Also you can name your partitions here

Click 'Options' and make sure GUID is the style of partition table

Click 'Apply'

Once the format is complete, click the red close button to quit Disk Utility

Click 'Continue' at the Welcome screen

Click 'Agree'

Select the partition you want to use and click 'Continue'

Click 'Customize'

Everything, except the base system is unchecked by default which is the way we like it

Once you are finished setting the options, click to continue

Time from install button (not counting DVD check) to reboot: 9 mins 53 seconds

When the computer reboots and prompts you to, hit F8 to enter startup options

Type -f and hit enter

Welcome movie will show up in about 20 seconds

Fill out all your information and when you make it to the OS X desktop you are ready to move on!

 

Step 3 - Get audio and graphics working properly using kernel extensions

If you made it through the Apple setup screens then you might have noticed the laggy video, don't worry, it's time to get extreme, yes, extreme.

 

NOT Working after install

Sound, Accelerated video, internal drive displayed as removable drives, CPU shows up as unknown in About This Mac,

 

VIDEO CARD NOTE: It is important to find the Kext for your particular video card. Search around the forums and Google to try to find one that is working with your card. I found one that works with my EVGA 512 MB nVidia GeForce 9500 GT card which I'm including in the attachment. If you install the wrong one you might be stuck with a black screen and reinstalling.

 

Run OSx86 Tools which should be in your Applications folder

Click Install Kexts and install these two kexts

------ NVKush (or the appropriate kext for your video card)

------ HDAEnabler (For sound)

 

Restart your computer and at the Darwin prompt hit F8 and then -f and enter

 

I then installed the 2009001 security update from Apple which fixed the drive icons

Step 4 - There is no step four. There is no step four. (Imagine Jeff Goldblum here)

Audio in and out, FireWire, USB 2, Quartz Extreme, and pretty much everyting should be working. Below are a few of the issues that you may run into.

UD3R Hardware roundup

3D acceleration works great, Open GL apps are fully accelerated

FireWire - 6 pin connector works, didn't test the 4 pin connector, captured DV & HDV streams in multiple apps

USB - All front and back jacks working at full 2.0 speeds

Rear speaker jack - working - select 'Internal Speakers' from the 'Output' tab of the 'Sound' control panel

Rear mic jack - working - select 'Internal microphone' from the 'Input' tab of the 'Sound' control panel

Front headphone jack - working - select 'Headphones' from the 'Output' tab of the 'Sound' control panel

Front mic jack - not working

SPDIF - Haven't tested

Surround sound - Haven't tested

Ethernet - works - Haven't checked to make sure it's working at gigabit speeds yet

Screensaver - works

Restart - works

Shutdown - works

Sleep - works

Wake - works from keyboard or mouse

Display sleep - works

Display wake - works from keyboard or mouse

Apple software update control panel - works[/font]

 

NOT WORKING

Parallels errors out, saying the system doesn't support virtualization, but VMWare Fusion works great.

Time Machine full restore using Leopard disc overwrites the EFI bootloader, there is a fix, reinstall the bootloader

1) My mic in does not work (front or back)

2) My Sleep, Shutdown, Restart DO work. But sleep only works if you select sleep from the apple menu. It wont sleep on it's on. Something must be keeping it awake.

3) Does your Timemachine work? I had to do another set to get it working. The info is on my XP machine. I will post it when I get over there later today

Thanks! I haven't checked to see if mine will go to sleep via the energy saver control panel yet, will do that. Does yours wake up on mouse or keyboard events?

 

I haven't tried time machine yet, not sure if I'll be able to test that.

 

Don't know the diff between NVKush and NVinstaller. NVKush was the first one I tried for my 9500 GT and it works like a charm so I didn't try anything else.

 

Do you have the UD3R 1.0 or 1.1 board?

The system wakes with a mouse click but not keyboard.

 

Timemachine is awesome. You will either need to get another HD or repartition your single drive to 2 separate partitions. Use first for you OS and second for timemachine.

You can try it. This thread/guide is for different hardware than yours.

I just use the three kexts at the top of the BIG P45-UD3R thread. I used Kext helper.07. Audio out works fine but I never got mic in working. I didn't bother too much with it because I have a USB webcam with mic. I was going to try to make sure the audio kexts were install in the S/L/E folder and see if that helps.

OK, I installed DSDT patcher, PCEFI, ICHX drivers, AppleHDAEnabler+A889a kext, R8111 kext, EFI string for GeForce 8600GT (no Nvinject or anything), OpenHaltSomething kext. I can't remember the rest but you've got the gist of it here. It really works 100% OOB. No kidding. This board is fantastic, even my USB SD card reader works perfectly.

thank you for sharing your experience. I've got a problem. When I overclock the fsb over 400, then OS X doesn't boot! During boot there's no harddisk access.

 

Booting to XP is no problem, works up to 480 MHz.

 

But OS X just works up to 399 MHz and then it's finished. Could somebody try to boot over 400 FSB? I also set the multi to 6 so the cpu is not overclocked at all!

If you can run an all SATA setup then do it. The JMicron IDE controller is flaky in OS X. If you are running IDE drives you'll probably get random kernel panics. I did.

I blindly mixed the binary file of someone who recompiled it (which worked on some boards but not ours) with the rest of the widely available kext that create kernel panic (usually when more than 3GB is installed), and it amazingly worked... (I had 4GB at the time, now 8GB)

I've been using it since January~February without trouble

the main osx install is on a sata drive but I also have two IDE for data and timemachine backup

 

so IDE works !

 

 

 

could you check the other UD3R thread, I'd like you to try something since you have an iPC setup (I have a retail install)

very important, with this JmiscronATA you need to disable the option

"Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in System Pref / Energy Saver

(it's checked by default)

 

and you won't ever get a panic due to the jmicronATA

I have one UD3P rev 1.0 Bios F7

2Hardisks on RAID 0 and 1 Non RAID

I`ve tried to install IPC on my machine but still no success. It always hangs on language selection screen . I googled about it and realized that IPC doesn`t support RAID setups.

 

Do you know if there is any chance to install IPC on raid setup and make it dual boot with windows 7 (i already have it installed and works perfect)?

I have no idea. That's a little over my head. I tried to stick to the simplest setup that I could. If you just accessed the RAID on the Windows side it'd probably work but then you might have to adjust your BIOS settings (turn RAID off) everytime you boot to the Mac OS.

 

I also plugged in a Netgear wg111v2 WiFi USB stick that I had lying around and installed Netgear's drivers for it in OS X and it works like a charm. They go for only $10 to $15 on eBay.

ok...so im having this problem of when i restart my computer mac os doesn't wanna work...i choose Mac but nothing happened...maybe because i didn't install any kexts cuz im a dumbass???
