tackle Posted March 20, 2009 Share Posted March 20, 2009 Let's say you buy a new motherboard. You install Windows XP for example, and every part of the computer works as it should. The motherboard comes with drivers for the chipset. Should one install these? I don't understand what difference they make, if any at all. Could it be that they are only needed if Windows XP does not recognize something on your motherboard? I totally get things like audio, they need their drivers for the device to function at all. In my example, I said that you installed the motherboard (without installing chipset drivers), and everything WAS stable. The other way I can interpret your post is that you're saying "Windows isn't stable until you install the chipset drivers, cause the ones that come with windows are buggy". In any case, your reply stirred up another interesting question, at least for me that has never installed linux. How do you get your MB chipset drivers to work in Linux? Is it the same way as in osx86 world; ppl creating their own hacks and releasing? All the Mainboard manufracture makes there products for windows, not for Linux or Mac Think before you post. Everything requires drivers and Linux in particular has a lot. Also windows is incredibly stable, as an OS. It's often important to install chipset drivers if you are on Windows XP. Unlike Vista it will not find drivers for you and the OS defaults are often pretty shabby. Installing the correct chipset drivers can improve harddrive speed and stability.
