ahoymehearties
So, I'm trying to do things right and not be a total osx86 newbie, but I've finally gotten stumped. I'm getting random overlay lockups with iatkos 5 (distro used on account of awful nforce board). I previously narrowed this down to the seatbelt problem, which I then fixed with the sticky thread up top. But this isn't just relegated to mounting dmgs...it happens truly randomly. If I can get into the system and use it, it seems rather stable. But the first few seconds after boot, I get random lockups. The OS seems to load completely (dock, menubar), but then I either get the "please restart your computer" overlay or it just hangs completely. Anyone solve a similar problem? That I do, 4 gigs. I tried the iPC distro previously and installed the RAM fix kext it came with. Would you recommend that'd be a good place to start - installing that fix? I'll see about finding it and trying it, will also report on the debug. Thanks for the advice there, I was not familiar with that command. Beerkex'd
Or you can pull out some RAM leaving only 2 gigs. If you can install then, finish the install and prepare the fixes (normally drive controller driver kexts, JMicron, VIAATA) when you're done. Then put the RAM back. Installation wasn't a problem...the OS, when it works, runs quite smoothly! It's just this random lockup problem during, so I can manage the kexts from within the OS. Makes it easier to do online research on fixing what's wrong. I hope this fixes everything and just leaves me with dealing with my C-media PCI card. I can live without sound for a while. verynice
Also instead of taking out your ram sticks at darwin prompt press f8 and type maxmem=2048 this should cut your ram down to 2 gigs. If you have nforce board you probably need the applenforceata kext from the previous post. I have 6 gigs of ram and this fixed but i lost the ability to use my sata dvd drive. You can only get so close !! Good luck and don't forget to post yor results. ahoymehearties
I went with the advice here and unfortunately I didn't have much luck. I've been able to recreate the lock-ups though, and they seem to be only when data is being transferred - usually at the beginning of a download. Therefore, I believe the problem would be my nforce LAN driver. I do hope I'm wrong, but I'll definitely post if I get it fixed and how it was done. ahoymehearties
Do you have an nforce4 nic ? Afraid so! I'm going to try the kext from here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=125569 With luck, that'll put me right. ahoymehearties
Problems solved by applying Mysticus' nforce fixes. Solid as Iraq. Thanks for the help, guys! Now I've got weirder problems - starting a new thread so others can search with greater ease.
