zim2dive
The new Mac Mini is released today.. the high-end/low-end model seems very poorly distinguished to me.. $200 for 1G of RAM and 200G of HD space.. the only thing I see about the low end model that concerns me is NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 128MB of shared DDR3 SDRAM (low-end) vs NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 SDRAM (high-end) how likely is that to be some an end-user can "adjust" ?? (a BIOS setting? or is that EFI in the Mac world?) Assuming you can, then there would be no reason not to buy the low-end and upgrade yourself. (as a side note, is there a comparable hackintosh to the Mini? The 9300/9400 IGP boards all seem to have issues as best as I can tell from the rather lengthy threads) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/155918-new-mac-mini-how-to-adjust-video-memory/ Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
I reckon it's because the low-end Mac has 1gb RAM, so Apple doesn't want too much cannabalized. Maybe if you upgrade to 2gb RAM it will give 256mb to the graphics. But honestly, it won't make a big difference - the lower end Mac mini is clearly better value. as a side note, is there a comparable hackintosh to the Mini?mmm...not really. Hacks and Minis are two quite different creatures - nothing compares in terms of size and shape (& power consumption!) to a Mac Mini, but Hacks are potentially much more powerful.
