kaneda26
Here is the long preface, or just skip to the next paragraph for the point of the post. I have wanted to start coding for the iPhone / iPod Touch ever since I bought my buddy's first gen touch off him. I am a Windows dev though and do not own a Mac. I have tried installing osx 10.5 on both my AMD X2 workstation via Leo4All and my old Intel Vaio s460 with iPCosx. In both cases, I can get OSX running, but on the AMD machine, I got no wireless, LAN, Audio, or USB, so that isn't really an option, and on the Vaio, everything was working great until I installed the iPhoneSDK. Now it is in a reboot loop and after almost 2 weeks of trying different install methods and forum searches, I am giving up as my hardware is probably just too old. So have been thinking about buying a netbook with good compatibility. I would get a legit Mac Book if my finances permitted, but instead I'm just gonna ebay my Vaio and make up the difference for a much cheaper netbook hackintosh. I have read that the Dell Mini 9 and the MSI Wind are both very compatible. But I can't find any first hand anecdotes as to success with iPhone/iPod Touch development and the iPhone SDK. Any recommendations? I understand that there are non-OSX methods of iPhone development, but a) I wanted to try the OS out, from what I've read, using the SDK on OSX is the easiest way to get going, and c) I wouldn't mind being able to sell an app for some beer money should I actually be able to produce something worthwhile. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/155776-iphone-sdk-on-osx-netbook-recommendation/ Share on other sites
terrasque
I'm in the exact same boat as your are hear. Does anyone have any recommendations or can you post an update to what choices you have made. I'm currently considering the s10. mini 10, or mini1000 and but have been unable to determine if the netbook platform is a worth while development machine. kem
I have a Dell mini 9 running 10.5.6 with the iPhone SDK. Everything works just fine. I've only compiled basic things so far, but no speed issues. Now that Dell has discontinued the mini 9, you can probably pick one up pretty cheap from Ebay or go with the new 10v once people work out the kinks of full Leopard support. There's a dell mini forum (use google) where there's a strong Mac community. Pretty well supported.
