Some progress.

I re-installed.

Step 0. Insert iPC and boot from DVD .. booting takes several minutes (DVD seems to sit and churn, but eventually installer comes up)

Step 1. erase HD and format extended/journaled from Disk Utilities in Installer, quit DU and continue

Step 2. from Customize I selected

- Kernel: 9.5.0 Voodoo kernel

- Video: none

- Audio: ALC888

- Chipset: MCP67 (I have mcp78) (nforceATATest fails)

- Ethernet: nforceLAN Driver (Forcedeth V variation also works)

- Fixes:

CPUs=1

Shutdown Restart

Step 3: Restart after the install fails. Manual shutdown, restart, remove DVD, and go.

Result:

Good:

- boots into OS X

- Ethernet works

Bad:

- Video: VESA (ok for now.. 8400 gs is on order)

- Audio: no worky.. no sound output options in Sound Prefs

About This Mac shows:

- 2.7GHz Intel Core Duo (right speed, wrong chip)

- 3 GB DDR2 (correct)

I'm not sure if System profiler info is correct?

Intel High Definition Audio, Dev ID 0x10250153, Audio ID 12

Display Device ID 0x084b

Does NOT see the wireless PCI card that is installed (says no PCI cards)

Again, I'm a newbie at this.. can I try different audio drivers without a full re-install?

You should be able to add audio hardware as i would think it is like a pc where if you upgrade your hardware you can just do some minor edits and not have to redo everything.

---

How long did you have to wait at the 0-slash for the installer to come up?

I wait around 10-20minutes and no sign of any installer. Did you boot with any flags and if so were there any errors?

Thanks for showing what you used to get the installer working (even though i can't reach that step >.< )

I never got 0-slash from the installer.. only AFTER the install.

Insert DVD.. boot.. wait ~5 minutes.. installer.. ~20 minutes.. installer is done. Had to shut down with HW button.. reboot.. voila (when I chose the correct chipset)

For the audio, I figure it'll be something like under Ubuntu.. I had to compile.install a newer version of alsa to get support for my chipset then set the .asounrc file.

Small update.. PC got "sick"... screen went all white and then I got nothing but fan at jet-speed when I rebooted.

I had to unplug from power and remove the mobo battery to reset back to a happy state.

Wondering if one of the drivers could have ticked something off... unlikely, but little other explanations.

So I used this opportunity to reinstall and try a different audio driver. I tried the legacy ALC 888, addr 0. (I tried ALC888 and ALC888 ASRock previously with no result)

From System Profiler, I now get

Intel High Definition Audio:

Device ID: 0x10250153

Audio ID: 888

Available Devices:

Line Out:

Connection: 1/8 inch Jack

Headphone:

Connection: 1/8 inch Jack

Line In:

Connection: 1/8 inch Jack

Speaker:

Connection: Internal

S/P-DIF Out:

Connection: Optical

S/P-DIF In:

Connection: Optical

but no output devices available from Sound prefs. So its a small step forward, but not much else.

Ideas?

EDIT: also my ethernet is flaky. I had a connection, and then 10 minutes later when I went to Safari it claimed my ethernet cable was unplugged. This is w.ith the nForceLAN driver

u chose voodoo 9.5 but u didn't select the seatbelt.kext?? i thought we will get an error.

im getting what u got. circle slash and kernel panic upon reboot

Um, didn't know about seatbelt.. from googling, what I see is a lot of references to fixing DMG-mounting issues.. but that's not been my problem (so far).. do I need it for something else?

I only get the circle/slash on reboot when I pick the wrong drivers during install. I never get circle/slash on install.

also I usually choose Verbose fix, so I see the system hang on reboot (if I've picked the wrong drivers), probably see that instead of circle/slash ?
