I've searched high and low and have read everything that I can. Here's my config:

____________________________________________________

Processor:

Specification Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 3.40GHz

Instruction sets MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, EM64T

Chipset & Memory

Northbridge Intel X38 rev. 01

Southbridge Intel 82801IR (ICH9R) rev. 02

Graphic Interface PCI-Express

Memory Type DDR3

Memory Size 8192 MBytes

System

System Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.

Mainboard Model GA-X38T-DQ6

BIOS Version F7b

BIOS Date 04/03/2008

Graphics Card:

Nvidia 8800gts 512mb

LAN

2 x Realtek 8111B chips (10/100/1000 Mbit)

___________________________________________________

I've tried:

Boot 132 Disc (Original and modified) and Retail 10.5.6 disc install.

Installs fine, once it boots up I get the message "Waiting for Root Device"

Also Tried: 10.5.6 iDeneb.

Install completes. Once it reboots it comes up with the crash message and tells me to turn off and reboot.

Bios settings are set to ACHI for sata drives and the PC has 2 x 500gb sata HD's and 1 x Sata DVD/RW drive.

I've tried to locate another install that someone has done with the same motherboard but can't find any located on this forum.

Ideally I would like to get the Retail install going but if that isn't an option then I am willing to try another distro if need be.

Can anyone recommend what I can try or know of a successful distro that i should use for this model motherboard?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

GA-X38-DS5 Almost same mobo, try to install with these settings

  • Install Method: Retail DVD + Apple 10.5.2 Combo update (dsmos.kext only needed to boot it)
  • BIOS Version: F6
  • Audio: ALC889A works (In/Out/Mic/SPDIF) with patch AppleHDA.kext (will break shutdown), using AppleHDA.kext w/ fix shutdown breaks Mic input
  • LAN: Works w/ vanilla kext
  • Purple SATA port (gigabyte SATA) Works w/ vanilla AppleAHCI.kext
  • Orange SATA port (ICH9) will need a patch IOATAFamily.kext
  • IDE Works
  • WORKS: Shutdown, Sleep and Reboot (Not working on Vanilla kernel)

X48

  • Retail Installation 10.5 with Boot-132 CD. Set SATA to AHCI mode and use a SATA DVD drive for install.
  • Use the Chameleon bootloader on the Boot-132 CD. After installation, use Kext Help 7b and Taruga_Leopard_alc88x to get audio work.
  • Then apply software update to 10.5.6. Sleep-mode shuts down the computer, that is the only bug so far. (Edit: Checking "Restart Automatically after Power Failure" seem to enable sleep)

X38

  • Install Method: Kalyway 10.5.2
  • BIOS Version: 1201
  • Audio: Speaker and Digital Out works (sometimes have some minor issues)
  • LAN: OOB
  • SATA & IDE: OOB
  • JMicron PATA: OOB
  • USB: OOB (May not recognize all USB ports)
  • Firewire: integrated VIA VT6308 works but crappy... buy a firewire pci card with VT6306
  • Had keyboard error with USB/PS2 adapter, no error using PS2 directly
  • Install from dvd sata otherwise "still waiting for root device"
  • USB DVD Installation works also
  • Updating to 10.5.3 using "software update" does NOT work
  • Shutdown does not work properly, fans keep rotating

Another X38 Mobo

  • Install Method: Kalyway 10.5.1 - Install Info Below
  • BIOS Version: 303; Revision: Unknown
  • Audio: Audio Out works OOB, In doesn't work
  • LAN: Works OOB
  • SATA & IDE: Both work OOB
  • Optical Drive: Which one? Any weird problems with installation?
  • Do shutdown, reboot and sleep work?
  • Installation Instructions:
    1. Combo Update (No Reboot)
    2. Kernel Update (No Reboot)
    3. Repair Permissions
    4. Reboot
    5. Apple Graphics Update (No Reboot)
    6. New Natit Driver
    7. Repair Permissions
    8. Reboot

Another X38 Mobo

  • Install Method:: Quad boot portion: Installed XP Pro SP2 first (using acronis to hide other 3 partitions) than Vista (same hiding method) than osx86 than ubuntu with Grub. OSX86 Method: Kalyway 10.5.1 + Patched Kalyway Update 10.5.2 + Patched Kalyway Kernel 10.5.2 + Graphic Update
  • BIOS Version: 1/11/08
  • Audio: Works with AppleHD patch and AC885 kext (2.1 and digital and input)
  • Video: 8800GT works with Graphic update + nv... latest (google 8800gt osx86 download)
  • LAN: Had to install off gigabyte p35 cd and edit for 8052 in the info.plist file
  • SATA Support works with AHCI
  • IDE Suppport works
  • RAID w/ Areca 1210 Working (RAID 0)

Another X38 Mobo

  • Install Method: Kalyway 10.5.1 & Kalyway Combo 10.5.2 Update using PCWIZ's Tutorial and Additional Installers
  • Audio: ALC889A Works 100% with PCWIZ's patch (applied twice, first time didn't take.)
  • Ethernet: Works 100%
  • SATA: All 6 ports work @ 3.0 Gigabit
  • USB: 2 ports reported as High-Speed 2.0; 6 ports reported as USB 1.0 (Have not pursued a fix at this time)
  • Optical Drive: SATA LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1L Works 100%
  • IDE: Not tested.
  • Shutdown, Sleep and Reboot: Works
  • Video Card: EVGA 8800GT 512 MB patched with Scott Dangel's NVinstaller v.41 Installed AFTER Kalyway Combo 10.5.2 Update. Works 100% (Core Image, Quartz Extreme and Rotation All supported)
  • Ram: 8 Gigs of 4 x 2GB G.Skill DDR-1000 PC2-8000 F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ All Recognized and Works 100% Yeah Baby!!!
  • Processor: Intel Quad Core Q6700 @ 2.67GHz

Goodluck!

Hey thanks for the info.

I have 10.5.6 installed with the modified 132 pre loader.

Pending a restart to see if I can boot without the disc in the drive next.

Everything seems okay except for a couple of things.

No Sound.

8800gts is detected but as below no qe/ci/gl so I am going through the forums to try and solve this one.

Revision ID: 0x00a2

ROM Revision: nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS OpenGL Engine [EFI]

Core Image: Software

Main Display: Yes

Quartz Extreme: Not Supported

QuartzGL: Supported

Thanks for the info and if anyone can help me find the fix faster would be greatly apprecitated!

Thanks

Update:

Did another clean install.

Retail with modified 132 boot disc.

Installs fine.

Everything works except for sound and graphics card.

Applied Time Machine fix and EFI'd the graphics card (worked this time). with CI/QE enabled.

Installed the sound driver Realtek alc889a.

Copied over 2 kexts from the boot 132 disc and patched with chammy!

Everything boots fine and everything still works!

Add the Gigabyte x38t-dq6 to the list of successes.

Thanks to everyone for providing enough info to putting me in the right direction. : )
