Hi, I was wondering if I fitted a second HDD to a Mac Pro would I be able to use this to back up on time machine or would I need an external hard drive?

And what is teh max HDD size I can put in as I have seen a 1.5tb HDD for £110

A second internal drive works fine for Time Machine and IMHO is better than external for this purpose as I don't really like to leave an external on all the time. Since your talking SATA drive then your good for whatever size you want unlike IDE chipsets I don't believe I have ever heard of a drive size limit on them, however sometimes you can run into a problem with a SATA300 drive not working with an original 150 variety chipset if there is no jumper on it to force the 150 speed if the newer drive does not automatically fall back to the 150 speed like it supposed too.

Thanks for that! I shall get an internal hdd then, I have an external on my mini and its using up a mains plug socket so not having to plug it in would be a plus.
