Hey there. I'll cut to the chase . .

My brother forgot his Admin password and therefore cannot get into his profile on the system. We are limited to ONLY using the Guest profile.

The two options I heard to get around this is by using the 'Command + S' at startup to get into single user mode and then by inputting code, create a new administrator account. When I did this, I was never able to get into the terminal mode on any attempt (maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I doubt it).

The second option I tried was using the OS X Leopard Install disk (store-bought copy). When you insert the disk prior to startup, it is supposed to just run itself to the best of my knowledge and then you follow the prompts, select a new password etc. But this doesn't work either. It takes you directly to the Login page showing the profiles available to sign in as. It doesn't even rev up like it would if it were going to read.

So code hasn't worked as well as the install disk, now what do I do?

If anyone can steer me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. If you need more information about my system, please feel free to ask.

Thanks!

KEEP THIS ONE UNDER YOUR HAT, for security reasons, but resetting the password on a Mac (or a Hack) is ridiculously easy if you have a bootable installer disc.

Boot into the installer. Under the menu all the way to the right, along with Disk Utility and Terminal, is an application called Reset Password...

Just select the user whose password you need to reset, put in a new password, and be done with it.

Cheese!

I have the Mac OS X Leopard 'Install DVD' version 10.5 (2Z691-6037-A).

Is there any difference between this and a 'bootable' version. I'm pretty confident that the version I have is the correct one, if It's not, please somebody tell me.
