I put this up in the "Post Intallation" forum yesterday but it looks like this might be the better place for answers.

So last week I decide to sit down and get the cleanest install possible from a retail disk. Again trying various methods I reformatted a HD to GUID and I've had absolute flawless success with the grub-dfe.iso and have updated my retail 10.5.1 to 5.5 without any issues. I've added 3 kexts to get full system function:

AppleVIAATA.kext

LegacyAppleAHCIPortIntelICHx.kext from
Full AHCI recognition.

OpenHaltRestart.kext

I have a natively recognized LAN card, I've added a kext for my soundcard and NVinject.kext.

Trying to get it going stable with 10.5.6 but so far attemps work but my processor fan runs constantly fast and there seems to be some AHCI issues with Finder not promptly reading SATA disks and "Finder Not Responding" in dock before finally opening a folder and after awhile ultimately locking up the system.

I tried the "Intel SATA AHCI (ICH9)" kexts (4 in that package) via the OS86Tools App but they didn't solve the issue either. I did the DSDT patch, ran the terminal to remove AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext during install so I'm hitting a brick wall, no error messages on boot with -v. I've tried various installs onto a cloned backup 3 times now (each time starting from a pristine 10.5.5 clone) with pretty much the same result each time.

Any ideas?

Which AppleViaATA.kext are you using? Some versions have a mess of device ids, try without that kext and see if you get the same issues.

For the CPU fans, I think you need a Disabler.kext or remove AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext (not sure how it boots with it...)

Well I'm in 10.5.6 as I type. I installed the update without the old AppleVIAATA.kext and still have fan issues but no ATA so I go ahead and reinstall it and I get back my ATA but now the finder issues are remanifesting so I think I've found the culprit.

I also took out the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext but still have a lot more fan activity than in 5.5.

So now I'm in search of a solution for my Marvell ATA controller:

IDE interface [0101]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE6101 single-port PATA133 interface [11ab:6101] (rev b2)

I'm going to remove VIAATA and reboot. It might still work if I can edit out any AHCI info out of it maybe.

I'll post back here with results.

I have a bit similar problem, and i suspect its the AppleVIAATA.

Can you please post regarding "Some versions have a mess of device ids"

And if you have fix for it, i'l be glad to test it out.

Oh, by the way... your fixed jmicron is working great on my other P5k Board.

Thanks :)

Well I think I found the root of all my problems perhaps. Fan's still a issue but everything else was cleared up by removing VIAATA.

SOLUTION (so far no issues anyway)

I came across this updated IOATAFamily.kext from DuNe here and he mentions editing the existing VIAATA kext to strip out the SATA code. I sent him a note asking how but then just started experimenting and simply removed the strings from IOPCIPrimaryMatch in the Info.plist and reinstalled the kext. I love how all IDE devices are recognized immediately even before a reboot.

So far no problems but it's only been a couple hours. Full IDE device recognition and a snappy Finder that instantly reads all drives.

Now to resolve that SMBIOS thing and get System Profiler to report Model Name and such.
