yelloguy
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that has a Realtek 8187b wifi card. It has Leopard 10.5.1 working (nearly) perfectly. The wifi card was (sort of) working with WEP encryption. Except that it used to disconnect every so often. That was the reason I stopped using OSX on that laptop. Then I switched the router to WPA and after making some changes, the Realtek utility connects and shows a good signal strength but internet does not work. Anyway, I came across a wired.com article that said Dell Truemobile 1390 (from ebay) works as an Airport card out of the box. But that is not what I am seeing on these forums. I am seeing a bunch of problems being reported here mostly with the hardware wifi kill switch. Also the problem is I don't know how to change the card on my laptop. I opened the three lids at the bottom but none of them look like a wireless card that is replaceable (like memory sticks. In fact, one of the three lids is for memory) So I want to buy a fully compatible USB stick that I can use with this laptop and any future hardware I will buy. Looking at the HCL does not help much. What is the consensus on easiest to configure wifi USB stick now? Thanks in advance. yelloguy
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=150151 This thread talks about two chipsets (Atheros and Broadcom) that work as Airport but can someone provide the manufacturer/model to buy? yelloguy
I bought a Belkin F5D7050 at a local wal-mart for $30 on sale and it worked. The first google result on this forum for the model number lead me to the driver download and (here is the tricky part) leaving the laptop on for a while connected to the wireless without any problem. Have been using it for a couple of hours without the disconnects I experienced with the built-in RealTek adapter. I think I am going to keep it.
