bozeefus
hi there, i purchased a macbook 6 months ago and i love it dearly. my sister is going to college soon and is interested in purchasing a macbook herself. however, i fear she may not grow accustomed to osx, and i advise her to try it out before buying. i have a laptop from a couple of years ago and i am wondering if it is possible to install osx on it, so she can at least try the OS for herself. here are the specs from cpu-z: *I see from guides that SSE2 is needed but I am not sure if my processor supports it (it lists SSE2 according to the first screenshot but it also lists other stuff) *I found no info on my motherboard unfortunately *I purchased the laptop from ibuypower.com (note: never buy anything from that site again; very poor quality) *I plan on installing a "vanilla OSX" but would be happy with any distro that best mimics OSX Feel free to ask for more info if needed! And thank you so much for your help :-) Regards, Steven edit: if I am posting in the incorrect section, let me know Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149314-osx-possible-on-old-custom-laptop/ Share on other sites
Free Qaz
Oh my god. This looks like my old DV9000 HP laptop. The Xpress200 GPU was a {censored}. Never got it running at higher than 1024x768. Callisto failed on it. I installed 10.4.6 Myz AMD image. You can prolly get iPC or Kalyway 10.5.2 on there pretty easily. Try kalyway 10.5.2 first, because it's a good one for AMDs. Your processor is sse2/sse3 so you won't have to install and stripped down kernels. All in all, it will boot but you graphics will be your biggest problem. As long as your hard drive is IDE it should read it. Peace, -Free edit: dv8000 sorry Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149314-osx-possible-on-old-custom-laptop/#findComment-1056614 Share on other sites
insomnimac
You wont install 'vanilla' on an amd, simply. It can be done, you have most info there. Download a distro like iPC or XXX that is the latest 10.5.6, check the new releases section. You have SSE2 and SSE3 thats great, but the vanilla kernel will not work on AMD. You will need to use the voodoo kernel and select the chipset drivers for your SB400. Find out what gfx card you have as youl need to install that too, hopefulyl its nvidia, but most likely ati.
