I am planning on overclocking a q6600 on the gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R board. I'll be shooting for 3.4ghz but thats another topic for another day.

Anyhow, I would like to know if buying the more expensive ram would make a significant difference or if I could use a more moderately priced ram setup. Im going with 4gb to start, would like to do just one chip if possible so I can upgrade to 8, then 12, then 16 down the road if need be without scrapping my old, smaller modules. The board says the memory is "dual channel", does this mean I would need 2 symmetrical chips side by side?

What are your experiences with using the different ddr2's or ddr3's for overclocking?

Thanks!

Memory isn't a huge deal when overclocking a CPU. Your money is better spent on aftermarket cooler for the Q6600. That chip is notorius for getting hot under the stock cooler. I would venture out and try either an Artic Cooler 7 or a Tuniq Cooler. Both are around $40 and are a wise investment if you want to get to 3.4gHz on air.

As for the Ram, Dual Channel means you can pair up ram and get speed improvements. On your board, if you wanted to dual channel your ram you'd have to put two sticks it into the color coded slots, which would be Slots 1+3 and Slots 2+4. Also, if you wanted to upgrade your ram later and utilize Dual Channel technology I would suggest you buy all your Ram at once as slight differences in versions and speed will not allow you to "chain up" ram. You'd see a cut in efficiency, around 10%.

Hope this helps, you do need to tweak more than just FSB in your Bios so I'd recommend going to the Gigabyte forums and posting/reading there.

DDR2 1600 is better, but RAM has hardly any impact on overclocking in my experience. I'm not a total expert, but like I said there is a really good Gigabyte thread here:

Give that place a shot since there is already a plethora of info.
