I have the dmg of the 10.5.4 disc, but the only drive I have that will read DL dvds is IDE and isn't recognized by OSX until after I boot.

Would I be able to do the install within the current(10.5.2) osx install?

If not, is there some way I could extract the image to a flash drive or external hard drive and boot from there into the installer?

(this would be using the boot-132 method, btw)

Thanks

How did you install 10.5.2 in the first place?

If you can free up a partition, or recreate your 10.5.2 installation on an external drive, you can alternately boot on that. Then, follow guides for flat (mounted) IMG/DMG/ISO installations, and place the 10.5.4 OS on the new drive/partition. There are 2 such guides at the top of this forum category that show you the required Terminal commands, as well as link to files that may help stabilize your updated version.

Note: Make sure you have a utility installation to fall back on, in case the 10.5.4 build doesn't work. Chances are, the new kernel in the 10.5.4 DVD, along with other kext updates, will break your current working build if new patches / updated 3rd party kexts are not added prior to restart.

You can install to the external drive from within your current install by mounting your .dmg of the 10.5.4 then open Terminal using sudo -s to become root then.

 cd /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages

open OSInstall.mpkg

Once done with these commands to run the installer you can install on the external put the boot loader of your choice on the external plus your patches you will need to boot your system and you be able to boot from the external to see how it went if you like the results you can use Diskutil to clone the external back to your internal. You should list all the hardware in your machine for us to be able to give you further advice on what you may need.
