Ok, running a gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R Mobo, q6700, 6 gig ram, ati1600 video card. Just purchsed an

80 gb western digital Hd From newegg. I think it is a bad drive. When I go to disk utility in The Kalyway install It wont recognise my new drive. It sees every other drive exept my new one. I booted into Windows xp 64 bit and it won't recognise the drive either. :( Tried different power connections and different sata cables and different ports on the mobo. Nothing. The disk gets power and spins but My computer is not showing it. I just read about looking for it in the bios so I will see if I can find it there when I get home (I am at work, working hard of coarse) but if not, does that sound like a bad drive or do I need to install some type of driver for it or what?

Any help would be greatly appriciated. :) Thanks! - Jiggity

Jiggity,

It sounds as if the problem is with the HDD itself. If it is spinning up and still not being recognized, you may have a bad HDD (this is not completely impossible). I would do as you are planning, go into the BIOS - or if your machine is like mine - go into the SATA Controller's setup (you should see a prompt during boot up - mine is CTRL+S), see if the HDD is seen there.

If the BIOS is seeing the HDD, but none of the OS's are seeing it - see if you can perform a Low-Level Format on the HDD from there, and then see if the OS will see it.

If are still not seeing it in the OS, it is very doubtful that there are drivers needed. Usually if the controller sees the drive, then the OS will see it. It may not have a DRIVE LETTER, but in Windows COMPUTER MANAGEMENT under the ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, you should be able to see the HDD and there you can partition it, format it, and even assign it a different drive letter.

Good Luck.

Problem solved. Went under computer management in windows and gave it a quick format. Drive was recognized in windows after that so I booted from the disk and it was recognized there as well. Installing now. Thanx Curtis :)

Problem #2 Installed Kalyway. Get the apple sreen and the spinning wheel. That is all the further it goes. Guess I messed up on the install somewhere. Seems like I am not the only one with that problem. I will overcome! I ain't goin' down to no God D@^%ed Hackintosh

Ok, went to reinstall Kaylway after what initially looked like a successful install until it never got past the apple screen. Now It is doing the same thing in disk utility by not recognizing the hard drive. I have reformatted it in windows like I did before and it still won't recognize it. Windows recognizes it but not Kalyway. Also tried another version (not sure which one) that a friend had and it can't find the drive either. Any Ideas?
