RaveLikeDave
howdy all, okay so i recently purchased several products from newegg, and as its being shipped to me i'm reading about the motherboard i bought needing to get its BIOS flashed. i really have no clue what that means. the motherboard i bought is the ASUS P5Q-E LGA 775 Intell P45 ATX. if push comes to shove im willing to swap it out for another one. so i guess these are my questions. 1) Should i get a different motherboard? 2) If i end up using my P5Q-E, how do i go about flashing my BIOS? if it helps these are the other parts im going to be using EVGA Nvidia GeForce 9800 gt 3GHz Core 2 Duo E8400 8 GBs of Ram (4 x 2GB) OCZ Reaoer hpc edition 150GB WD VelociRaptor 10k rpm a samsung 22x dvd burner and a pretty cheap sound card. also i have no qualms about just buying an OSX install disk. would that be helpful? any thoughts on the matter are appreciated, thanks a bunch! drjohniscar
To flash the BIOS you will have to read the users manual. On my ASUS motherboard, running XP, it has an automatic utility which runs under Windows that does this for you. It goes out to the ASUS web site and checks for updates and than flashes the BIOS for you. If you are not running Windows you will have to read the manual to find out how to do this process. I recommend to update the BIOS on ANY new motherboard, or other technology equipment before you use it, as the board may have been sitting in distribution for 3-months before you purchased it and the BIOS will change soon on newly released motherboards. Hope this helps. kjartano
Normally, many people are very afraid of flashing their BIOS because this could break the motherboard... Personally, I've did it at least 1000 times and never had any problem... Unless you have a power breakdown during the update process, you should be fine. (If you are still having doubts, borrow one of those "no-breaks" and connect it and then update ps. Just make sure that you get the same model/vendor when you upgrade Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/148480-building-a-final-cut-station-could-probably-use-some-help/#findComment-1052461 Share on other sites
RaveLikeDave
just in case you look at this thread again kjartano, i have no idea what a no break is. also thanks for the heads up on the possibility of a mother board catastrophe. i wont be as sad when my board starts to sizzle and flame Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/148480-building-a-final-cut-station-could-probably-use-some-help/#findComment-1052500 Share on other sites
