ok so i have iATKOS V5i installed and was having the intel ProV nic issues just like everyone else does, so i was adding and changing some kexts and deleted the kext file set permissions and rebooted (just like every tutorial for the intel nicc says to) and the system wouldnt boot anymore.

so i stuck in the dvd and reinstalled, not knowing that unless i reformat the disk, all it does is 'update' your existing installation.

well after that was done i was back at my desktop with a mysteriously working intel NIC. the isntaller didnt ask me for an account creation or anything, it saved all that and just put me back to the desktop with everything working.

BUT

i had lost my username and password.

my account name is still there but the actual username is not and neither is the password.

i do not see an option to create a new account under the accounts panel, and i can not fix my name/password issue unless i know the existing password. which evidentially, it doesnt like what i am putting in.

is there a way to log in as 'root' and add a new user?

is there a way to fix my username/password issue given the way i have described it?

i basically can not do anything with my system except surf the web and very basic limited functions in the OS and i need to fix it.

can someone lend a hand, pretty please with a cherry on top.

**edit**

opening the console it shows my username i made originally

when i type sudo su it asks for my password and i use my old password and it takes me back to the prompt (meaning the p/w worked)

so why would my username and password NOT work for times when OSX requires me to input my username and password ? ie; installing app's, using software update, etc etc.

You should get info about how to enable the root user from the installation disc (or in Console) in Apple's website ; in OS X you can enable it in Apps/Utils/ and there's an app (I don't know the english name) with a grey map and a compass in the bottom ; you can enable the root from here (Edit menu).

Boot into single user mode

-s

at the f8 boot prompt.

You'll be logged in as root.

then

/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
passwd <username>

it'll prompt you to add a new password for that username. type it, then it'll ask to type again for confirmation. then type

exit

log in with your new username and password :)
