Hello there!

I have now decided to install Mac OS X on my Dell XPS M1710. This is the steps I've gone through

1. Downloaded Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 JaS SSe2 SSe3 Client/Server

2. Burned the image to a DVDR (don't know if it was + or -) using the Roxio program that comes with the computer - it said it was successful.

3. Removed the 2 GB mediadirect partition that existed.

4. Shrunk my big vista partition with 15 GB.

5. Formatted the free space to a FAT32 partition called "Mac OS X".

6. Rebooted computer from the burned DVD - started well, some things work fine and some other things seems to be problematic in the "DOS-like" loading screen with white text, but then the installer starts.

7. Opened the Disk Utility, erased the FAT32 partition to Mac OS Extended Journaled. Closed the disk utility, chose the partition to install.

8. Changed settings to the ones I think match my specs the best. ( I don't KNOW this though.)

9. Installation starts by "Checking my DVD before installing" and at about 50% it stops - There was a problem with reading your disc. Please clean it thoroughly and try to reinstall."

10. Installation failed.

I am a complete noob, but I have researched this problem a little and people with the same problem doesn't seem to get it working burning a new DVD with the same ISO. Why does this problem occur and how do I go about rectifying it?

All suggestions and answers and help will be greatly appreciated! :P I really want this working!

Download this app and burn iso at 4x:

Imgburn

you may want to confirm your iso is good by doing a MD5 check...

just google MD5 and the iso name and usually the iso MD5 will come up...

if this is greek to ya...just do a little reading and it will make sense...

some people skip the disc check....

often issues result from too quick of dvdr burn speed....

good luck...

Well the last 3 days have been strange. iPC OSx 10.5.6 pp5 iso has been burnt at 4x on 3 discs in an attempt to get past this very same problem.

I've been attempting an installion on an HP 6735s. (p/n: GW694AV). imgburn is a great tool and was used on the second two discs I've burnt for this process. Disc verificaion passed and the lovely music played.

I consistantly have the 'dodgy disc' error at 52% on the pre install dvd check and ,if I skip it, at approximately the half way mark during the install.

I'm not a noob at this and I currently sit confused by this situation. I will be using a different dvd writer drive at work next week and will try -R media as well but I am certainly not confident just at the moment.

This problem is so strange for me that my instincts and my Electrical Engineering troublesooting opinions are to assume the iPC image has a corruption. As I believe this is not the case, due to the feedback from the community, I will persist in writing an accurate disc.

I have also ordered an 8Gb flash drive to boot from instead of using optical media. It will be my first attempt at this but a step away from a dvd may be positive.

There does not seem to be all that much mention of this problem so maybe it is a very simple thing to correct. (maybe my media is simply {censored})

If anyone has worked through this situation, or is confident enough to give some advice, then please do so. I'll post my results as they come to hand.

It is really annoying that my first hurdle has been so close to the starting line. :)

Thanks everyone,

and Thanks to iPC etal. for a terrific production.

Cheers,

Cosdog.
