I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard with Realtek Alc888 sound. I need a driver. But that is not really my question. I would like to learn more about audio. What would I need to make this codec work on my computer. I see different things such as applehda.kext, applehda patcher. HDAEnabler.kext. What are these files. I find applehda patcher on my install, but really what does it do? I ask these questions because hopefully this will help me find and install my drivers for my sound.

AppleHDA.kext is the audio driver that supposed to detect audio on apple hardware.

since some onboard audio codecs which we have are somehow similar to those, we need to modify this driver with our codec data.

its a long thing to follow but won't be that hard.

to sum up,

there are 3 common things that works for alc888 uptill this moment.

1- using alcinject.kext along with an old patched version of applehda.kext (its a package installer listed in this forum on drivers subforum)

2- uning legacyHDA contorollers (which patch on the fly original applehda.kext , so you don't change or modify it)

3- using hdapatcher (which works for some, but you need to get a linux dump of your codec first) search the forum.

or you read the king's post and patch it yourself, but this is a non-easy job frankly.

pick your choice.

hope this helps :(

I have decided to use the AppleHDAPatcher method. I got my linux dump a couple of days ago from the place that Taruga mentioned in http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=32859&start=3900. I start AppleHDAPatcher and drag the file onto the icon. It opens up AppleHDAPatcher. I type the password and then nothing. It that how it works. Should there be some kind of text in the text area of AppleHDAPatcher.

I am using version 1.20. Yeah I just tried finder and I am getting no feedback at all. I guess the linux dumps are suppose to be in a .txt file right?

Ok, I got sound. I simply had to reinstall appleHDAPatcher. I then got confirmation when the patching was done. It was then trial and error until I got the right linux dump. I appreciate the help. Thanks.
