My next build depends on the fact that I'll be able to have a stable Leopard install on it. Actually, it's the main reason I'm building a new computer in the first place.

I'm very new to OSx86 and the works, I really don't know all that much about the things needed to do when installing, such as adding kexts or using bootloaders, adding pciids, etc. So I don't know how capable I am of being able to install OS X and change whatever needs to be changed. Most tutorials I've seen just assume I know how to work things like that.

I'm going to be using my build as a DAW, so lots of multitrack audio editing, producing, mixing, mastering, tons of plugins, things like that, but the key thing is that I'll be using Logic Studio. Also a lot of my gear is FireWire only, including my Apogee Duet which is Mac only on top of that.

I read the Gigabyte P35 series is one of the most compatible motherboards for Hackintoshes, so I got the P35-DS3L. For the rest of the parts that matter, I plan on getting a 9800GT, a cheap Rosewill PCI FireWire card that I'm pretty sure has a VIA chipset, and a Q9300. Though I've read the Q9300 has some issues with clocks or something like that. I was thinking of a Q8200, but I'm trying to get the biggest L2 cache I can without paying too much. I don't think the Q6600 will work for me, as I'll need something that runs cooler because I'll be going completely passive cooling in a NZXT Hush case. (Dead silence is required for the studio setting I'll have.)

Oh, I was also wondering. I was told that it's better to have a retail install instead of something like a Kalyway install because updates would 'break' the Kalyway install. But what's the difference or need in updating from 10.5.2/4 to 10.5.6? I've read tutorials for the Kalyway that seem pretty easy, and if I went that route, I'd probably do that. But if there's no real need to update...

Sorry for such a long thread, thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to the forum! I know the whole OSx86 thing can seem at times overwhelming. Don't worry, installing kexts or bootloaders is a bit troublesome, but it's going to be totally worth it. If you need any help, just ask me! Anyway, there are some fantastic GUI installers now (kexthelper + PCWiz's OSX86Tools) that make it totally easy.

I'm glad you've done your research, and have picked the right hardware. Everything looks good so far. My only question is, why go for a 9800GT if you are doing mostly audio work and want total silence? I would go for a lower-end card that's passively cooler. In my experience, graphics cards, especially high-end ones, can make a lot of noise!

On that note, if you want great advice/reviews on silent computing, nothing beats the obsessives over at Silent PC Review. Incidentally the quietest computer they have ever tested is...the Apple iMac :)

Well, you can choose a retail install, or a prepackaged install (like Kalyway). I don't recommend you get EFI-X. Why? Because it has issues and honestly, has no benefit at all over a properly set up OSx86 install. It just costs more.

So which one to get? It's up to you! Both work perfectlyWell, retail guides are a little trickier. I've found a very nice one over here at Anandtech.

Prepackaged installs, are much easier. They basically do all the work for you. However, a retail Boot-132 install with the extensions in a seperate partition, allows you to update without any issues. With a prepatched install, like Kalyway, etc. you have to just do a little housekeeping before you update.

10.5.5/6 is better than 10.5.2, it's a little faster, has fewer bugs, and spotlight is much faster. It's worth updating, and it's not too much trouble

I don't have much experience with Kalyway, I think Leo4All, iAtkos v5i and Jas are better releases. There are others like iDeneb, XXX etc. I rate all of these better than Kalyway. Especially because Kalyway is still stuck at 10.5.2 while these are all 10.5.5! Get one of them instead.

OK if you have any more questions, let me know! Cheers + Good luck.

Hiya you would be fine with Kalyway or a retail install. For either you would have to change some kexts after an upgrade.

You can download necessary kexts for your board, for either 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 from this thread

I've been using a ga-p35-ds3l for quite some time and now have it 100% as far as I can tell with a retail install.

If you need any help/advice pm me. Good luck Ian

Well, I'll use a 9800GT because I'm going to have use two monitors, one being a 24". I'm going to swap out the GPU cooler with a passive one, the only fans that'll be running are the case fans. Also I might do a little gaming on the side, ha.

Thanks for that guide, I only saw the older version before. Also the kexts package link.

Anyone know more about the Q9300 issue I described?

  • 2 weeks later...

I'am using chameleon, a couple of modified kexts and an injector for my ATI GFX-Card on my GA-EP35-* Mainboard for 6 month now. Before I had an iMac Aluminium with a poor TFT-Screen in it.

I ordered an EFI-X and give it a try to get a hassle free system. Let's see in a few days if it works ;-)
