I installed retail OS X on my Wind using a boot-132 disc and my retail Leopard install DVD, leaving a partition open to install XP on later, and installed Chameleon in order to make it boot without disc swapping...

But when I try to install Windows XP on the other partition I get a missing hal.dll error problem after the base installation, rendering the system unbootable.

When I installed Leopard I had to format the hard drive with a GUID partition map, since the retail DVD won't let you install on anything else. I thought this might be the source of theproblem, but since I was able to dual boot when I installed OS X with the "WindOSx86.iso" slipstream release (it uses GUID by default) I can't be sure this is the problem.

I have heard of at least one other person who was able to dual boot retail OS X and Windows XP on their wind, but now I wonder if they're just full of {censored} and that it's altogether impossible. There are so many results on google about people dual booting with those patched DVDs that it's hard to find what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have any actual information of having done this? Dual booting retail OS X and Windows XP?

Help is greatly appreciated.

I may get around to trying it as I want a dual boot, but right now i do not want to reinstall osx on my wind so i'm procrastinating.

I'm looking for a guide on how to do this without reinstalling everything.

This is a terrific guide, only I'm still having problems...

I followed the guide and everything, and was able to make the install DVD work with MBR partitions. Leopard and Windows XP show up on the Darwin bootloader list, but when I try to boot Windows from this list nothing happens.

Even after I set the Windows partition back to active, I get:

Error loading operating system

Words are inadequate to express my frustration.

Please help.

Bump.

i think i had a similar experience recently. i have 2 drives however. but if u use gparted to hide a partition it might work ? main issue i had to boot xp from darwin it seem to not support ntfs? . thats where the osloader came in handy.

what worked for me in 2 drive config. 1 GUID and one MBR using dfe-132 bootloader i hit esc 2 times then type 81 and loads second drive shows x partititon 1.1 and the osloader as 1.5 that one loads with error could not bot disk press any key, then xp loads for me lol ( i think if i play with osloader menu i can make the error go away) :D
