Mega Man
I haven't read too much about EFI, but from what I know so far it allows one to emulate the apple firmware and run OS X as if it were on native apple hardware, right? I read somewhere that the requirement to using EFI was an Intel Core processor and possibly SSE3. However, when I installed Kalyway Leopard 10.5.2, it seems like my computer has EFI set up already. When I boot it from Darwin, the first line that comes up is EFI Enhanced Bootloader v8.### (I don't know where to get this from the logs and it flashes really quickly....) EDIT: Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that my computer is seven years old. It shouldn't have an Intel Core Processor in it. (Centrino 1.5 Ghz with Mobile) Is EFI somehow installed on my computer? (What exactly is it anyway?) Thanks for your help. There's really no problem, as everything boots up correctly, but I was just wondering... Mega Man
Umm, okay... What I'm trying to say is that I don't think that my computer is supposed to be capable of correctly running OS X using EFI, but in fact my computer is. I was just wondering why this is the case. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll look Charmeleon up on the wiki. realityiswhere
he misspelled it, it's Chameleon, which is not in fact efi v9. Clearing up EFI: OS X comes with EFI on their motherboards instead of a BIOS. There is no BIOS on a real Mac. Some very new PCs have EFI, most have just a BIOS. EFI stands for Extensible Firmware Interface, it is Firmware installed onto the motherboard that is a 'pre-boot environment', like a BIOS. The 'EFI' as you think of it in EFI v8/v9 or Chameleon is only a FAKE emulation layer for EFI, it is not EFI itself. The purpose of EFI in Macs is to pass vital hardware information to the OS so devices work properly. This same thing can be achieved using chameleon with a 'device property string' (or gfx string, aka EFI string) into the com.apple.Boot.plist, the emulated EFI will pass this information to the OS. If you have any more questions about EFI, feel free to look it up on wikipedia, just be aware that you don't have real EFI, you have fake/emulated EFI. Mega Man
Thank you very much for your very clear explanation. So my computer does not have an EFI, but only an emulation layer for EFI.
