I am running 10.5.3 installed on a Dell 530

For whatever reason, I can't plug anything (thumbdrive, ext HD, ext CDrom or USB ethernet connector) into the usb ports and get them to work, UNLESS I do it before I boot up the machine.

If I plug something in AFTER OSX has already started, the items show up properly in System Profiler, but they don't work. There's no access until I reboot the machine.

Can anybody help me on this one? It's been driving me nuts for months

Thanks

Kernel version (uname -a in a terminal) must match the current System.kext version (navigate to System/Library/Extensions, right click System.kext and get info).

You've probably got an old kernel with a current System.kext.

If this is the case, either replace your kernel with a 9.3.0 kernel or replace your System.kext with an older version.

Oh man, if this works, you're the best!

Okay, here's what terminal tells me

Darwin MyMac.local 9.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 9.2.0: Sun Mar 2 00:11:08 SCT 2008; made by ToH:xnu-1228/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386 i386

And here's what right-clicking System.kext tells me. I assume that this is the info I'm looking for

Version: System Resource Pseudoextension, Apple Computer Inc, 9.2.2

Okay, so my newbie guess here is that the problem is the Kernal version 9.2.0 vs the system.kext 9.2.2 Which would be safer to replace? I'm totally afraid of breaking something else on the machine and having to do some kind of reinstall. Is there someplace where I can download a 9.2.0 System.kext?

Thanks again.

Thanks realityiswhere.

I just located this thread here: Solving USB problems; USB devices do not mount, SOLUTION POSTED: USB devices don't mount but do so if restarted. (doh!) which has the 'installer' program. I've just started reading the 18-page thread, but my guess is that I'll just try the installer that's linked in that thread unless there's any reason to do it manually instead.

Thanks
