Edu's Mac
I am a newbie too, but I think I can give you some tips: First of all, be patient. Get iPC 10.5.6. It worked for me, after installing over 7 distros. Burn the installation DVD, preferably in an Imation DVD. Memorex just sucks. Build your partition from Vista, but DO NOT format it, neither assign it a drive letter. Boot your distro from DVD. Obviosuly, you have to configure it on your PC Bios. Otherwise it will boot Vista. Press F8 when asked to. Then type on the line boot: -v and press Enter. That way, it will show the booting log. You have a SATA controller, so maybe the distro will show you Still waiting for root.... That is because your DVD might be installed in a SATA interface, and Leopard is scanning the devices to determine where is your DVD. If you count up to four of these messages consecutively, download and try another distro. Once you pass the SATA controller message, you'll see a lot of messages. Leopard will take between 3 to 7 minutes to show you the select language screen. If it does not show you this screen, boot again and type -v -x in the bootloader. Otherwise, get another distro. If you get a kernel panic during boot, this distro will not run. There might be a solution for that, but I'm sorry, I don't know what it is Once you get to language select screen, installing is pretty easy. Customize your installation so you can select the kernel, patches (for PS2 keybord, or mouse, or ICH), drivers for ethernet, video and sound. If you don't find your device in the list, don't get freaky. You'll find it in these forums. If not, well, at least you've got a Leopard. To get the drivers for Leopard, follow this order: (1) network, (2) video, (3) sound. Check these forums to get the drivers. Installing drivers is pretty straightforward: all about is installing files with .kext extensions at /System/Library/Extensions, setting appropriate permissions, fixing permissions and rebooting and crossing fingers. At ethernet, maybe all you'll want is to be able to get to the Internet. That's pretty easy. At video, first of all, check the following: (1) ability to change resolutions, (2) Core Image/Quartz Extreme (CI/QE) capability, (3) Dual screen. The last one is the most difficult to achieve. At sound, to get the sound out is a lot!! If mic enabled, better. If all input and output lines enabled, your god. Hope to have helped you. Happy new year.
