I tried to download the 10.5.6 update on iATKOS 10.5.4 (combo update) and it KP'ed at 18% done installing and when I rebooted the system, it KP'ed again.

Hardware:

950GMA

Intel Celeron M 420 @ 1.6GHz (single core)

(more hardware in sig if needed)

This isn't a solution exactly .. more of a life boat approach I use for times like this - being fairly new to OSx

* When you do your initial partitioning with disk utility, make at least 2 or 3 partitions (if only on the one HDD)

* Install you 'latest' OSx86 DVD to the largest partition

* Put aside one of the smaller partitions for backups

* And I always install Kalyway 10.5.2 (absolutely bombproof on my Toughbook hardware)

The reasoning is simple. I my latest and greatest install goes {censored} up after some blunder on my part, I try a couple things:

I boot into Kalyway, and take the kexts I backed up there from a time when my other install was running nicely, and I just reinstall them to that 1st partition, correct permissions etc and try logging back in.

Worst case scenario I just reinstall. Thankfully 24 hrs ago, for instance, my Kalyway (lifeboat) saved my ass, and allowed me to recover an initially unstable 10.5.6 update.

Give yourself a way back into an unstable install .. we can't all be Unix gurus.

Cheers,

Joe
