grc
I'm running 10.5.6 vanilla updated from the 10.5.5 of an iAtkos 5i install. Everything's peachy, CI/QE work, OpenGL is accelerated. Nice. I'm using EFI strings, no nvinject or other stuff. Just the EFI strings for the 8500GT as done by OSX86 Tools. The 8500GT is a 256MB Inno3d model. The only thing that's wrong is, resolution changes will result in a black screen. I can run games like Harvest which will use 1440x900 without a switch and that works. Programs like stellarium though which switch resolutions won't work. I have to Cmd-Q the app and then suspend the machine (cmd-opt-eject). When I wake it up again, the desktop is back. This is really irritating now as everything else is perfect. What can I do to make resolution switching work? When you change resolution and appears the black screen, restart manually the computer within 10 secs and Leopard reboot with the resolution that you have selected. This is a normal behaviour with Nvidia 8 series and only 1 monitor. grc
Okay - well. If there's no solution for the 8xxx with the resolution change, which card will work? It's not so much of a problem for me as the system is so stable, I can launch a res changing app, hit CMD-OPT-EJ to suspend to RAM, wake it up and the app works. This is for the few I can't set to 1440x900 (or whatever my desktop is). So which NV cards work with a resolution change, using only EFI strings? karanaizen
i even tried using VGA instead of my DVI port but it didnt make any difference... still get the black/blank screen while changing resolutions.... is it a drive/kext problem??? but the card works fine... i am really clueless here Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/143445-resolution-change-with-nv-8500gt-256mb/#findComment-1018662 Share on other sites
grc
I'm using VGA as my screen doesn't have DVI. I don't mind getting another card that works better - it's just that this 8500GT is so nearly just 'there'. I'm not driving it with any kind of kext, just with EFI strings and the stock drivers. Perhaps that's the issue? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/143445-resolution-change-with-nv-8500gt-256mb/#findComment-1019780 Share on other sites
nobb1x
a friend of mine solved that issue using a dvi->vga adapter and connecting the monitor to the adapter, booting the system with that configuration. Give it a try if you have an adapter handy. Likwidkewl
I had to use the DVI to VGA adapter on my 8400GS (06E4) to change resolution. grc
Okay, I'll borrow one of those and try that. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/143445-resolution-change-with-nv-8500gt-256mb/#findComment-1021158 Share on other sites
grc
Okay, I used a DVI-VGA adapter on the DVI port of the card and bingo! She's fixed! Resolution changes all work fine. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm using a borrowed adaptor, time for ebay I think. sashabe
I confirm, this method (VGA-DVI adaptor) works (at least i have the same videocard as in the title of the topic, iAtkos7 based install). Connecting to VGA directly gives black screen after trying to change resolution (though you get the desired after reboot but this is defo not good for games etc.) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/143445-resolution-change-with-nv-8500gt-256mb/#findComment-1210429 Share on other sites
