mknabster
I currently have a 500GB Lacie d2 Quadra hooked up to my MBP. I'm planning on bringing this current one to school with me soon, and getting another one for home, either a 750Gb or 1TB, i can't decide. When i'm at school, the older 500GB Lacie will be my backup there, then when i come home on the weekends, the bigger, newer one will be available. On breaks, i'm planning on daisy chaining them via F800. Which brings me to my question. How exactly does daisy chaining work? Does the computer see 2 drives, or do they both add together to create on drive? Because i have about 400GBs of data on my current one that i would be transferring over to the newer one. And also, what do you guys think, 750 GBs or 1 TB for the new one? It's about a $50 difference between the 2 from where i'm getting it from. Aurora
To answer your first question, when devices are linked via FireWire they appear as separate devices to the host computer. To 'pool' your drives to be used singularly would require either a RAID setup or a rather sophisticated filesystem, e.g. ZFS (<3). As for the size difference, for slightly better stability and shorter access times, go with the 750, unless you really need the extra 235 GB. mknabster
Curious, why would it be more stable to have the 750 over 1TB? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/142727-daisy-chaining/#findComment-1013269 Share on other sites
Aurora
Not quite sure, but the RMA rates for TB drives are higher than lower capacity disks. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/142727-daisy-chaining/#findComment-1017927 Share on other sites
mknabster
Huh, that's interesting. I might go with the 750 then. Thanks for the input! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/142727-daisy-chaining/#findComment-1018254 Share on other sites
inimicus
Well, a 250GB is more stable than a 1TB! Go with the 250GB instead!! /trolling. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/142727-daisy-chaining/#findComment-1020399 Share on other sites
