Ok, I'm an idiot and didn't check here before trying the 10.5.6 update. System kernel panic'd some way through the install and now won't boot.

My system was kalyway 10.5.2 and then updated up to 10.5.4. I *think* I was able to do the kalyway combo to 10.5.3, and then ran system update to 10.5.4.

So my question is, what do I do now? Is it going to be possible to rescue this system? Can I reinstall and save my user data? If so, can you point me to a more recent guide? It seems that things have changed recently with different booting and installing options.

thanks,

Best way to do this is to get MacDrive (Hint, search google), install it, and delete the System folder on the root of the Mac HD.

That way, you preserve all of your data.

So are you suggesting mounting my hd in a windows box, installing macdrive, deleting the system folder, then reinstalling?

Couldn't I theoretically do this with , say, a Linux liveCD? If so, what folder can I safely delete? And after deletion, should I recreate my initial steps, ie, kalyway 10.5.2, kalyway combo update to 10.5.3?

I see in your sig the promotion from iDeneb. Is that 'distro' recommended over kalyway?

I do recommend iDeneb due to the fact that I have had no issues with their release.

As for a Linux live CD, you would need to find a version that allows for write access of an HFS drive. That is what MacDrive does, it allows for read/write access for HFS volumes. The folder you need to delete is /System, and leave everything else intact.

I have been in your shoes before, and I did this to get my system back up.

Hey, thanks for the help. Not following basic good admin principles and not reading this board first should have earned me no responses on this thread, so I'm very grateful to any input.

I found out ubuntu liveCD does has hfsplus rw support, so I'll give that a shot.

I happen to have an iDeneb install around so I'll try that before Kalyway, as I have a t least one data point that it can safely be installed on an existing partition after trashing /System.

I'll report back here with the results. iDeneb was peoblwmatic for me on my older vaio laptop, but I have very vanilla hardware on my desktop so maybe it will work better.

Is there anything special I need to do during the iDeneb install process to indicate that I'm installing on a pre-existing system (sans /System)?

Is there a good iDeneb guide that you found helpful?

ok, I was wrong. Apparently the ubuntu liveCD does not has hfs write support if you have journaling enabled.

So I booted off the iDeneb disk and just got a terminal and did the delete from there:

cd /Volumes/Untitled
rm -rf System

ok, proceeding with install, fingers crossed.

Wow, it seemed to work. system came back up and most things look ok. I have a few issues:

my audio card isn't working. It is a ALC622 onboard audio (shuttle k48) I selected the patch in the iDeneb installer but apparently it didn't work. I think it worked on kalyway out of the box

my video is restricted to 1024x768. I had to fix that with kalyway too, i think it was just manually replacing a kext

But the big one: my user doesn't have admin privileges anymore. Any idea how to fix that?

fixed admin issue. booted from ideneb cd, used password reset utility to set root password. Then rebooted, authenticated as root in user preference pane to add my user to admin group. logged out, logged back in.

Still working on sound and video.

I am sorry, but you not having an admin account is beyond my scope of knowledge.

However, I do know that if you boot into single user mode, you can reset the admin password. I am unsure of how to do this, but I assume that if you search for it on this forum, you will find it.

Try AC97 audio in iDeneb.

Please let me know if all things work on K48.

If possible, please also test 2GB*2 ram for me.

EDIT:

http://image.shuttle.com/ResourceCenter/do...p?file_id=11772 K48 works with 2GB*4,check the shuttle K48 spec. pdf!!!

How about 10.5.6 retail working?

  • 2 months later...

I saw:

• 2 x DIMM slots, 1GB per DIMM (Max 2GB)

on the PDF. Quite less for today's standard. I will try to jam 2*2GB and see if it works later.
