When I search a mailbox in Mail, searching "Entire Message" never gives any results. Is not greyed out, it tries to search but doesn't find anything. But: when I search everywhere instead of in a mailbox, or if I use the blue spotlight search, it finds all messages. Subject, to & from search works.

This worked before. Not being able to search my mailboxes is terrible. There's lots of discussion on this but I can't find a solution. So far i tried:

- repair permissions

- rebuild LaunchServices and mailboxes with onyx

- delete the envelope file and let mail reindex everything

- mdimport ~/Library/Mail

- rebuil mailboxes from within mail

- restarts

What else is there to try?

I could add a long rant how much spotlight sucks and how sad it is Apple replaced a simple and reliable search function with a buggy monstrocity that fails to complete the most simple tasks but I'm gonna spare you that.

Edit: I'm using 10.5.4.

Checked and I have the same problem, fixed it with:

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.

Click Spotlight.

Click the Privacy tab.

Add (+) a folder or even an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.

Remove (-) the item or volume you just added.

WAIT FOR A FEW MINUTES

Try rebuilding the launchservices database. It worked for me.

In terminal run this line:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
