How can I disable the dock collision detection and/or change column view background color?

I hope my question about the dock was clear... I like having the dock always showing, but it prevents the screen space available when maximizing windows, and in general is a useless feature for me.

 

And the column view is what I use but it is too bright with the white background.

 

Any ideas?
