I am having a problem with my sound... I've been reading around a lot about different sound cards and patching techniques but I haven't found much on ICH8 Intel HD Audio cards. When I boot up OSX I can start iTunes with about 3 seconds of glorious sound. The sound will die after a brief playback or immediately if I try to change the volume. My device is recognized in [ system preferences > sound ] and in the system profiler. I figure that since the sound works for a couple seconds the drivers have to work... just something is making it STOP working.

My system:

HP dv9700 - installed with Kalyway 5.5.2 DVD

Core 2 Duo (2.0GHz) - Vanilla Kernel

GeForce 8600M 512MB - 256MB support with NVinjector 4.1 (custom NVCAP value)

ICH8 Intel HD Audio - ???

lcpci output of the Audio Device:

[...]

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Update: I was talking to my brother who uses a MacBook who told me about this nuisance he has when using his composing program in which the sound cuts out in some way... anyways:

That lead me to the discovery that my sound only cuts out when the volume spikes. I booted up my computer with the volume all the way down and discovered that my sound works fine so long as I don't turn it up beyond about 40% -- that's when it dies.

So now, I have sound but it's very quiet.

I decided to see if I could get any other kind of feedback from my computer when the sound died so I opened up the Console (system log) and killed the sound by turning it up.... nothing.

So I have quiet sound.

Any ideas on how to get my sound to NOT cut out?
