PJ the iPod Sensei
Ok after much cursing, foaming at the mouth, and puppy kicking. Surfing the web reading lots of posts. I got Lawless 10.5.4 to install on my ASUS M3A78-EM Athlon 64 X2 4000. I'm running a Seagate 250GB on SATA1 and a Toshiba DVDRW on SATA2. It installed after I switched the SATA Config to AHCI in the bios. That was half the battle.... However After Installing Leopard I'm back to my initial issue with it hanging on waiting for Root Device. This is my after midnight project. I swap the cables to the 250GB SATA and tinker around till 4AM. But I was Amped to get it to install last night. (I can almost see the Light at the end of the tunnel) I'm not versed in Linux or this new Mac stuff. I'm OLD School Mac.. Mac Plus/SE/Classics were my original toys. ImKharn
Ive been at this for 3 weeks now and have almost ran out of variables. I can still try reburning the Lawless DVD at the slowest rate. Ive already downcored to 1 switched to ahci , tried with the dvd drive as master and slave alternating with my hard drive. Done all of the start up options (the rd= stuff and platform= and disk) bruteforce one by one. The exact setup that worked for the iDeneb install will not work for the Lawless isntall. I have both ide and sata hard drives and dvd drives at my disposal, and another osx86 up and running also) The iDeneb installed for me but gave me the still waiting for root device after install (yes i used the amd options in the customize window and even tried several kernels) I gave up on getting that to boot and started the process over again with a lawlessppc 10.5.4 dvd and with this i cant even get past root device for the install. You seem to have the most similar mobo with a success story, if you could please help me, or someone out there. (If you post a tip that at least gets me to the operating system ill send you 15 usd to your email via paypal) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/139484-asus-sata-bios-m3a78-em/#findComment-999481 Share on other sites
dolomite1D
I'm using the M3A78-EM also and have managed to get to and through the OS X installation screens on the Lawless distro, but no successful boot as of yet. Have tried multiple different configurations on the customized install page and changes to the BIOS but I still the get the pinwheel of death when trying to boot from HDD after installation completes. Initially had the waiting for root device problem until I set up the DVD drive as an external drive (used an old drive enclosure for IDE HDDs) and changed the SATA settings in BIOS to AHCI. This allowed me to make it to and complete the OS install. After that I had the com.orbyte.driver.pcgenusbehci kernel panics when trying to boot from the HDD. I disabled the USB2.0 controller in the BIOS and now it get's through the initial loading but hangs on a grey screen with the pinwheel. My Setup: AMD Phenom 9950 2.6 Ghz Quad Core Asus M3A78-EM Seagate Baracuda on SATA1 G-Skill DDR2-1066 2X2GB Samsung SH-S202N IDE DVD Burner.
