xVariable
So, I have an old IBM Thinkpad A20M with an SSE 2 processor in it. I'm pretty sure it'll run OS X, but the CD writer/DVD reader in the machine will not boot the bootable DVDs I have. I know it's the drive, coz I've tried several different DVDs, burned from ISOs, that all worked on other systems I have here. I could check around to see if there's a firmware update for it, perhaps but, barring that, figure there's two possible strategies that might be employed to get this to work: 1. Attach a USB DVD drive to the machine that supports bootable DVDs. The machine has only old USB v1, however; so, that'd make for a nice, long install time. 2. Attach the laptop's HD to a PC that can boot a bootable DVD, install onto the former, then pop the drive back into the system. BTW, there's a gotcha here: Linux bootable DVDs boot absolutely fine on this system, so I'm scratching my head, doing a "WTF?!". Any ideas as to what's happening there, or generally what I might do here to make this happen? Thanks!
