Hello all :)

After trying out the iATKOS 4.1i release, and finding out that something in 10.5.4 didn't my laptop (Toshiba Equium A200-1V0), I decided to dig out my old iATKOS 1.0ir2 DVD. Not being content with 10.5.1, I thought I would attempt to update it to at least 10.5.4...

For this, I used Kalyway's 10.5.2 and 10.5.3 combo-updates. For /my/ hardware, the 10.5.2 update was flawless - and I was able to boot back into my system with no problems (though 10.5.2 seemed a bit sluggish).

The 10.5.3 update involves a couple of additional steps, and greater risk. On the first attempt, I just followed the readme and also didn't select a new kernel to install - but just ran through the kernel installation with none selected. After reboot, the problem was clear - the same errors as seen on the iATKOS 4.1i install DVD.

Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.AppleAHCIPort

Couldn’t alloc class AppleICH8AHCI

Couldn’t alloc class AppleAHCI

After a lot of googling, I had still not found the best way to get round this (that's why I'm writing about it now ;p).

I reinstalled 10.5.1 from scratch (I don't currently have any free space to create a backup) backed up /System/Library/Extensions/, upgraded to 10.5.2 , made a backup of /System/Library/Extensions/ again and then proceeded to install 10.5.3 update (this time, I made sure AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext was being removed - though I think the kernel installer does all these extra steps automagically). Next, I booted the 10.5.1 install DVD, opened Terminal and moved AppleACPIPlatform.kext and AppleAHCIPort.kext from my backups to the real Extensions directory and deleted the cache. Rebooted, and received a different error about IOAHCIBlockStorage - a very welcoming sight ;-).

Anyway, I coped over IOAHCIFamily.kext from my backups - deleted the cache again and rebooted. This time, no error - but it rebooted by itself. This time, I passed -f at the boot-loader and now I'm back in and running 10.5.3. Before feeling too cocky, I'll reboot again and report on the situation before upgrading to 10.5.4 ;p.

Well, that was fun. 10.5.4 update was tragic ;p. And somehow, even after partition format/initialisation - 10.5.1 installation wouldn't complete either, so I had to recover the encrypted Linux installation >_<

Oh well, I look forward to spending some more hours playing around with upgrades, if I don't end-up trying iATKOS 5.0i of course.

Night.

Update:

Bugger it, after a fresh install of iATKOS 1.0r2 I updated to 10.5.2 then decided to wait for iATKOS 5i to 'arrive', and installed (without wiping the partition!) over my current install with the following:

  • Chameleon bootloader
  • dsmos
  • AppleSMBIOS netkas
  • 9.2.0 Kernel (ToH)
  • x86 ACPI
  • X3100 Driver
  • ext2fs
  • NTFS-3G

I decided to play it safe as you can see, perhaps when I have more space to back up stuff (and have refreshed my patience!) I will try out some of the newer features.

Anyway, the upgrade/install worked fine - but if you do the same as this, you will need to boot into single-user mode (-s at prompt), fsck+remount / and set a password for root. This is needed because after the install, your user account will be dropped to the "Standard User" group so you'll need to login as root in System Preferences -> Accounts and allow your user to become an Admin again.

You could probably do this from single-user mode, in *BSD or Linux it would just be a case of adding the user to an 'admin' group and check sudoers file - but I'm not sure how this will all work with OS X's directory services.

Cheers,

Hey, stuck in the same boat with you.

I'm running an HP Pavillion a200n.

P4 Processor 2.4 Ghz

1 Gig Ram

Everything (Vid&Sound) onboard.

Ran the Kalyway 10.5.3 combo update, so I am now at iATKOS 1.0i 10.5.3. Running into the same issues trying to update to 10.5.4. I tried the downloaded apple update. Whoops. Not too good. So now, I am trying to think what my choices are.
