Pro tools + DP6 choppy and slow

I'm runnning leopard 10.5.4 on my 'hackintosh' and I'm running pro tools le 7.4 and digital performer 6.

 

When I run digital performer 6 it is just really choppy and slow, when I hit space it takes a second to start playing. There is a delay when switching between windows. It is really unusable.

 

We have a similar problem with Pro Tools, sometimes it works ok, and other times video play back is super slow, it usually starts when i want to import files. I use a mbox2 interface, but also use an edirol ua-25 and it has the same problem.

 

When i look at the cpu monitor, it often seems very high - 50-60% when the program is running.

 

I have a core2duo 3Ghz, 4gb ram and an ATI EAH3650 silent magic video card. Does anybody have any idea what may be causing the problem?

 

I tried the software on my friends real G5 and it works fine.
