Guest izx2
How do I install PC EFI? If you are installing Leopard, you have 2 options: either installing it from your OSx86 DVD (if your OSx86 DVD has an option to install PC EFI) or if you want more control, you can install it manually. If you have Tiger, your only option is to install it manually. If your install DVD contains an option for installing PC EFI, select it and install and PC EFI will automatically be installed. If you are installing manually, then your best option is to use i am...me's EFI v8 installation guide here. I read this quote in the Newbie FAQ thread and could not understand the part where it says "If your install DVD contains an option for installing PC EFI, select it and install and PC EFI will automatically be installed." Although the answer I am looking for may be implied within its context, I'm not seeing it. I understand a vanilla install means that the EFI check/verification thing makes sure that Apple-compatible hardware is being used. I am also aware that PC-EFI is what makes the OS installation think that it actually is being installed on Apple-compatible hardware when in reality its being installed on a PC ---> hackintosh. It says up there that an "install DVD" may contain an option to install the PC-EFI thing. What is this "install DVD"? Is it a distro of osx86 (kalyway, iATKOS, iDeneb) OR is it a regular, unmodified install DVD for Leopard (w/ an unmodified kernel)? I am confused even though I have been researching this stuff for a while now... It would be great to get some answers. Thank you. From my own experience here is what I think is meant. Installing using the Kalyway disc (burned onto a DVD) will install PC EFI as a normal part of its installation, it is really automatic (I can't remember if there is an option to not install it, but why would you?). I assume the same is true for the other distro installs, but I have never use them so I can't be sure. All of these installs are modified from a standard Apple Leopard install. This is the easiest method to start with for most people. Unfortunately there are some down sides, especially as you try to update to newer Leopard releases. These days a lot of installs are done using the Boot-132 method- you boot from a CD (usually) using an iso that contains a minimal Linux and some other magic. It also sets up things so that a retail Leopard DVD can then be swapped into the drive and boot from it and install normally. In this method there is an extra step after the install- you boot again from the CD iso and install a set of files plus the Chameleon PC-EFI onto the target HD. A set of kexts, and possibly a modified (non-vanilla) kernel and some other files might go into an "Extras" folder on the install HD root. If this is set up right, then you can subsequently boot from the HD directly. If you are just starting out, it is probably best to follow a recipe in one of the tutorials that deals with your specific motherboard, or the closest one you can find. There are so many variations in methods that it is hard to keep all the information straight at first. Guest izx2
Thank you. I will definitely look into the Boot-132 method. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/138486-request-for-vanilla-install-clarification/#findComment-980108 Share on other sites
