desoto0311
Hello all- Been reading up on osx86 for quite a while now and decided to take the plunge. I'd like to detail this install and it's problems so that I may a.) Get this to actually WORK! and b.) help others with similar hardware configurations. Here's my system and a link to the site I got some of my info from: SONY VAIO VGN-FS980 Laptop Intel Pentium M 1.73GHZ (sse2) 1GB Ram Sony DVD Drive (Appears to be IDE?) Fujitsu MHV2080AT HD (80GB) (Appears to be IDE) Partitioned: NTFS (WinXP)/Mac Journaled(osx)/Fat32(as a shared drive) chipset driver Intel 915GM (ich6) (More detailed info: http://www3.dealtime.com/xPF-Sony-Sony-VGN...es-Notebook-PC) OSes: Windows XP Home Edition & OS X 10.5.5 (almost) My process: Acronis Disk Suite (10) to partition single drive into the following: NTFS(XP)/Fat32(OSX)/Fat32('Shared' Drive) iDeneb v1.3 macOSx install. Converted OSX(fat32) drive to Mac Journaled via disk utilities. Initial install was vanilla; no patches, etc. Have attempted multiple installs using various patches on ideneb DVD with no luck (see below) After install, multi-booting comes via Darwin/x86 boot. At this point everything 'works' only in the sense that I can now choose my OS and either one will boot. OSX does not complete the boot, and using '-v', it *appears* (with my limited mac experience) that everything pretty much is loading properly EXCEPT I get the "still waiting for root device" line repeating... Having searched through this forum for days, I've seen this appear a LOT, and it *sounds* like it might be chipset related. That being the case, I guess I would need to know what the 'right' kernel or other patch(es) would be for this. Also, I've tried the halt=0 deal, and the rd=diskXsY options on boot with no success. Thanks in advance for the assist, and if I can supply any additional information please let me know. Thanks, -D Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/138004-1055-on-sony-vaio-vgn-fs980-laptop-multi-boot/ Share on other sites
desoto0311
Nothing? Okay. Will try this hardware with Kalyway 10.5.2, then run the update to 10.5.5. Maybe someone can answer this question then: In the osx86 wiki when it says (on the successful install area, it's mentioned on a few setups) to 'run the update', are they referring to a kalyway update or the actual Mac OSX online update? I'd *think* it would be the former, but I would like to confirm one way or another. Will post observations when trying with this new OS. desoto0311
Kalyway iso won't finish boot. Appears to run from DVD with the '-v' option and I don't see any noticeable errors, but it just stops. Guess I'll try a version of 10.4.7 or earlier though at some point I'm guessing that working too far backwards will be worse than using something more current. desoto0311
Attempted full, clean install (no multi-boot) with XxX_x86_Os_X86_10.5.5 public beta1, Open beta Would not install. Same circle/slash (still waiting for root device) error. Have uninstalled everything back to factory (Windows) specs. Will attempt XxX_x86_Os_X86_10.5.5 again, following their guide(s) at a later date. Hope to get better results in the future, but it at least *appears* futile on this machine. Probably a waste of time. One of the hang-ups that I can see is that with the install, if specific kernels, kexts, or drivers are required, I wouldn't know which ones to install. I know my computer's specs, but the names of the aforementioned kernels/kexts don't tell me what will 'work' for what, so it's an install/re-install {censored}-shoot. TOO many hours at the moment for all of that. Anyway with suggestions is MORE than welcome to post. I know for a fact I'm not the only one on these boards with on-going 'root device' problems. Thanks. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/138004-1055-on-sony-vaio-vgn-fs980-laptop-multi-boot/#findComment-978575 Share on other sites
Uptown_J
Have you been successful with this? I am having a hard time with the exact same laptop. I tried iAtkos v5i but it was extremely slow. I think it maybe had to do with the kernel I used in that version which was the 9.5 version I believe. Ethernet does not work wifi does not want to connect to anything though it shows up with 2200bg drivers It is extremely slow and unstable. I only get one resolution, no QE/CI using ElliotGMA900 fix I tried iDeneb v1.3 with the 9.4 kernel and it loads fine. That is the only kernel that works. 9.2 speedstep or 9.2 sleep give me a circle with the line through it and the error I see with -v is "still waiting for root device" My issues with iDeneb are: I cannot get the wifi to work using the latest 2200bg drivers. The ethernet (Intel pro 100 ve) shows up and will turn green in the network preference pane but - does not get an IP address and will not connect to anything on a static ip address. I can get multiple resolutions on the video, but I still cannot get GMA900 QE/CI with the ElliotGMA900 method. I would like to help, what did you finally go with? Uptown_J
Bump? Also, the iDeneb issue with the Ethernet card is bad hardware. I tested it with fresh WinXP as well as Ubuntu and it does the same thing. The 2200bg is a known issue with the encrypted network. I went back to Windows for now but I am going to give it another go this weekend. Have you been successful with this? I am having a hard time with the exact same laptop.
